Longtime Sonic the Hedgehog fans can look forward to a key piece of series history surfacing in the upcoming remastered iOS and Android versions of the classic 16-bit platformer Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as the new mobile ports will include a finished, playable version of the game's long-lost Hidden Palace Zone.

Originally planned as a bonus level showcasing Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic after collecting the game's seven Chaos Emeralds, the Hidden Palace Zone was scrapped midway through Sonic 2's development. The level's remnants later surfaced in a prototype version distributed as a downloadable ROM file, sparking fan discussion and speculation for years afterward.

The mobile version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is developed by Sonic Retro members Simon Thomley and Christian Whitehead, creator of the "Retro Engine" that powered the multiplatform Sonic CD port released for Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, PC and mobile platforms in 2011. Whitehead is known to incorporate cut content in his modern-day Sonic ports; the recent Sonic the Hedgehog remake for iOS and Android featured an expanded debug mode giving access to items scrapped from the original game, and his Sonic CD adaptation hinted at a revival for Sonic 2's lost Dust Hill Zone.

The Hidden Palace Zone is featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's upcoming Android release, and is included in a free update replacing Sonic the Hedgehog 2's previous port on iOS. Both the new Android version and the iOS update are launching tomorrow.

Christian Whitehead does good work. I will probably buy this if it has controller support.

Just noticed there's already a version of Sonic 2 on iOS, wonder if this will just replace it and everyone who bought it will get a free update.

Yes, it's a free update on iOS if you have the old port.

Anyone know if this is launching alongside sonic and sega Allstars racing transformed on ios? Sega announced it along with sonic 2 in October saying that they would be out in November but nothing happened.

This version needs to become the standard version of Sonic 2 ported to the Wii U, PS4, Xbone etc.

Why not? It's the best version out there.

Just got this on my Nexus 7 - this is not your crappy backbone job of old. Christian Whitehead has done an amazing job, no crappy filters, full widescreen, full speed.

Screenshot - looks pixellated blown up but on a 7 inch tablet looks beautiful. My only complaint is touch screen controls. Wish these would come out on steam.

Both the Sonic CD and Sonic 1 ports were excellent and i can't wait to play this port of the best Sonic made.

Have always loved the Hidden Palace Zone music from the soundtest so getting to play it is pretty awesome.

Most of all though, i genuinely find the touchscreen controls on Christian Whitehead's ports very easy to use. When i was playing Sonic CD i reckon i was controlling it as well as i could with a mega-drive pad. Good Job!

P.S. If this has multiplayer, online or even local, this will rock. My friend and i have a Sonic 2 multiplayer rivalry that is still ongoing.

It does. Saying that when I tried on Android there was no one there to play with. :-(

I love the emulation but the menus are awful, very slow and the on screen button - why is it not a dpad anymore?

Is there no way to rotate the screen, near impossible for me to play because the headphone jack sticks out to the left of the direction button so I have to hold over the jack which is really uncomfortable.

Lovely port though, perfect.
