Well, I've decided to make a topic covering what I believe to be one of the best and most underrated Sonic games ever.

The marvellous Sonic CD! The game that made me get a mega cd ( :fp: ), well, get a mega cd and then spend a year scouring second hand shops for it anyway.

A good friend of mine, who is a massive sonic fan, hasnt even HEARD of it let alone played it, so I guess there may be some people in the same boat (shame on you).

So lets have a bit of  for sonic CD

Also, DAT INTRO:

Hell yes, Sonic CD rules

Was introduced to it via the PC version about ten years back, and played through the Mega CD version on an emulator recently. It's fascinating how different it feels to the MD games, the level design's a lot more scatter-shot and maze-like, which is why it seems to be a divisive title for fans. I love it and would easily consider it one of the best games in the series.

Question is though; US or JP soundtrack? I think I prefer the Japanese one overall, but the US one is still fantastic (don't listen to those either/or naysayers!). Two of my favourite tracks:

Hmm, i odnt recognise the music form the second vid, so i'm guessing the PAL version had the same soundtrack as the JAP one then??

WORK THAT FUNKY JAM, C'MON NOW! 8-)

Agreed on the level design, i actually think its terrible in places but it does encourage time travel to explore. I always try to get to the past asap, if only for the lovely music.

Oh and the fig 8 standing start, best sonic move ever!

Yeah, the PAL version had the same music as the Japanese version, it was only the American one where they changed it (something about paying royalties to artists whoose songs were sampled, I think). As I say, I think both soundtracks are excellent; unfortunately Sega's never made a version that allows you to freely swap between them. Instead, any re-releases of the game have just used the American one.

I love the ridiculously inspirational lyrics in the JP/PAL opening and closing. Probably the only 16-bit game to encourage you to keep an open mind and believe in yourself!

But yeah, the time travel aspect does wonders for the game's replayability. It's insane how much detail ended up going into the game as a result of that mechanic. The loading times when time warping are a bit annoying though!

I've just started playing this on Gens.

No idea what the hell's going on.

Levels changing for no apparent reason when I'm doing nothing in particular (jumping or running along), a special stage that gives me no clue what to do in it, and levels that are all over the place design-wise.

I don't really like the music either, or the enemies that are too small to see until it's too late and you get hit by them.

I thought this was supposed to be the best Sonic game?

You've been ruined by modern games.

I loved Sonic CD back in the day and it still holds up as a great game today, though Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my favourite by a slim margin.
I loved the time travel aspect and the different ways zones could end depending on how you did in previous acts.

Oh, and PAL/Japanese soundtrack was infinitely superior to the american one, especially the intro.

I think with this game you really benefit from taking your time through the levels. FOr me i love to try and make a good future in each zone, so hunting down a 'past' lamp-post, successfully going to the past and then hunting down the enemy maker thingy, is really good fun. The level design is a mess, but i think its born out of trying to have multiple paths across the time periods.

This game has the super peel out (best sonic move EVAR)

And it also introduced metal sonic (later to appear in sonic 2 and sonic 3). The sonic CD version has the best look

Wasn't Sonic CD after Sonic 2 and 3?

And what's all this past/future stuff? That's partly what's confusing me.

Sonic 2 and 3&K had Mecha Sonics, not Metal Sonic.

I've never played the game, but I do remember genuinely laughing out loud the first time that Sonic Boom song came on in Smash Bros. Brawl. It's amazing.

I finished this yesterday in bed with all them emeralds.

"YOU'RE TOO COOL!!"

Yes, yes i am

Something odd i noticed that this version has the sonic boom intro (which IIRC is the american one) but the jap soundtrack :? It could just be a case that the rom dump has the jap MP3s in it but still a curious thing.

Stardust Speedway, Y U NO LET ME GO FORWARDS? :x

Better be XBLA.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I play Sonic on a Sony console after it was Sony's fault that Sega stopped making consoles

Was as much Microsoft's fault. Why buy a Dreamcast when you can be playing with graphics like this...
