Finished. Apart from the final boss being a bit of a dick and having cheap moves, apart from the first section which is piss easy, it's an incredibly easy game.

It's enjoyable to play, but given that it's not very challenging and the side scrolling bits are way too floaty, I'll give it a 5/10.

I love Sonic R

Sonic R was amazing.

Sonic actually runs rather than using a strawberry floating car.

This was good, that's it...

Mania is a download only game made by gaijins and not the game sega are putting the brunt of their sonic marketing into.

More like a bias towards retail games that are products of that country. They've given perfect scores to 25 games, 23 of them were made by a Japanese company. Also 19 of the perfect scores came in the last ten years. It's a magazine with a reputation for over-hyping and over-scoring games.

Are you describing a sexual experience Alvin?

Does anyone else feel like the review scores for this are lower than recent equally gooseberry fool Sonic games, because Mania has shown the press what we could be having? And by comparison the Sonic Teams are revealed as what they really are - gash.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Possibly! For an unpolished, unfocused entry in the series to so quickly follow the antithesis of that must've been jarring. Also could be a bit of to critics being harsher over time, we're less likely to see 90+ metacritics these days etc.

I remember Sonic 4 Episode 2 got reviewed far worse than Ep 1 did, despite it being significantly better in every area; perhaps that was effected in a similar way coming after Generations.

Honestly I think Sonic Team just gave up after Colours. Starting with Secret Rings there is a clear game design that was being favoured. If you look at Secret Rings, Unleashed, Black Knight, Colours, Generations and Forces you can see they have been experimenting with this game design for 10 years now.

Secret Rings established the design, Unleashed settled on what it was actually going to be, Black Knight experimented with it, Colours made it click as a coherent game.
However, Generations didn't build on anything Colours did, what made it worse for Sonic Team was that everyone was having a love in with the classic sonic stages (which in hindsight must look pretty sub-par compared to Sonic Mania) while throwing a lot of spite at the modern sonic stages.

Following generations they dropped what they had spent 5 games working on and tried something new only for that to fail even harder. Now they have made Forces but by the sound of things they've made no attempt to try and refine what is, in my opinion, an experimental game design with a lot of undiscovered potential.

This is so frustrating as I feel there is a decent 3D Sonic game to be made, but not by Sonic Team. I honestly feel that if Nintendo had a crack at it they could do an amazing job.

If Nintendo could just get Sega to part with Sonic Team, so that they could do with them what they did with Retro Studios, I think that they could make some truly wonderful 3D Sonic games.
