(Not sure why the thread is showing up twice...and if I edit one it edits both so...)

The 3D Sonic 2017 game has been announced as Sonic Forces at SXSW.

More information to come tomorrow from the looks of things,

twitter.com/Babylonian/status/842506751467380736

The game is using a new game engine, Hedgehog Engine 2.
The game comes from the same Dev team behind Colours and Generations.

A bit of (not great video quality) gameplay,

Hmmmm....

Sonic Colours was decent from what I heard and I liked Generations so I'm glad to see them going for the two Sonic route again..... But it looks a bit grim for a Sonic game. Ah well, it's probably gonna be shite anyway but at least we've got Sonic Mania to keep us going if it is.

EDIT: Gameplay footage looks exactly like every 3D Sonic game to date but shinier. Hopefully it's more like Generations than the other ones as I feel they finally got it pretty good in that one.

So identical that if I edit one it edits both, and replies to one show up in both when you open the thread but not on the thread listing page.

The cycle begins again.

Sonic Farces doesn't look too bad right now, but time will kill it off I'm sure.

There's normally hope to start with but it looks gooseberry fool from the get go.

Urgh, "realistic" Sonic levels.

I think it looks... promising, maybe? Sonic Adventure was pretty good for the time, hopefully they've learned a few lessons from the success of Generations and Colours.

Decent main theme, at least.

Better angled gameplay video:

Hmmm...

Looks gooseberry fool. Hold up and boost until you get to a group of enemies, double tap the homing attack button 4 times, hold up and boost until you get to a straight bit and have to press left right left, Hold up and boost until you get to a group of enemies, double tap the homing attack button 4 times, hold up and boost...

It looks alright so far, i'm sure they'll announce a stupid gimmick soon though where at certain points Sonic turns in a cat

What the strawberry float is the obsession with forward running sonic levels, they suck! You can't see enemies taunting you hit them so you end up doing the level by attrition or doing it so many times it is memoriesed.

strawberry float of with your stupid 3D sonic, and strawberry float trying to add a shitting story!

Lets go back to when that game was released.

Whenever you went into a game store, there were always 10-20 copies of the game second hand, because everyone had either traded it in, or got bored of it. The game is also pretty content light. I have no idea why its attained some sort of classic status, but it is without question in my mind the most over-rated game of all time.

Because maybe it wasn't as bad as you seem to think it was? I mean, compared to today's standards it'd suffer badly, but for the time it was pretty damn fun, despite the terribad facial animations.

When are they gonna let Sonic die? It's like they have been keeping the poor little strawberry floater on life support since the Dreamcast. Hasn't he suffered enough?

I think I understand why there is a 'problem with Sonic games.' When Sonic and Sonic 2 were released these 2D fast side-scrolling games were visually and technically amazing and had top quality gameplay. The problem is that compared to new game genres a 2D side-scrolling game is now regarded as simplistic and out of date. So Sega have tried to modernise the Sonic games by making them 3D but this changes the perspective to behind running forward, which also changes the gameplay to something that is prettier but perhaps harder to play.

My suggestion. Make a 2.5d Sonic game so the gamer still has the full side perspective which retains the original gameplay but also has updated visuals of the modern era - no 8 bit pixel art. Then throw in some bonus 3D levels that look like Sonic Forces. :)

The side scrolling bits of generations were gooseberry fool too, I don't know everyone loved that game.

Mania is what we need, nothing more.

The Sonic game that I've played most is Boom... outside of the technical challenges and a few shonky bits, it was a great mixture of 2.5D, 3D, structured and free-roaming stages. Sure, the implementation perhaps didn't match up to the ideas, but the mixture of approaches was fun.

But I don't think there'll be too many folk backing me up on a return to that game  .
