No - I'm referring to the Sonic Retro Forums.

Whitehead and another key contributor to Mania, and the earlier Retro engine remakes of Sonic 1, 2, and CD, used to post on there quite a lot (as well as some older Sonic fan forums that morphed into Sonic Retro over time). I'm not sure if they are still active but they've certainly dropped the odd hint there in the past.

I was a bit of a Sonic nut back in the day so spent quite a bit of time on some of these old Sonic fan communities! :shifty:

I recall poring over their Sonic 2 Beta thread(s) a decade and a half ago, rapt with fascination.

Same here, watching as the various discoveries from the prototypes slowly found their way out - the mythical Hidden Palace Zone, the oddity that was Wood Zone, speculating whether Dust Hill was ever real and whether we would ever find a trace of it.

Those were great times! :toot:

Just finished Encore mode on the new Plus DLC :toot:

Didn't get all emeralds alas, forgot many special ring locations and the new UFO stages are hard D: So happy to have more, I could just play those endlessly. Though I hope one day there's a mod to play those and the pinball stages at a higher resolution, would be neat to see. Would also like it for the main game so sprite rotation + scaling retain detail.

Dug the new level palettes, though I wasn't always sure that unrecognisable parts of the level werenew, sometimes it may just be something I forgot/never came across! Has been a number of months since I played Mania, still this was a lovely way to replay it. The character switching should be a mainstay feature going forward, it's a very clever replacement for lives and a wonderful way to add variety to the game. It's a treat to get a play of every character in a runthrough, as well as being able to swap between two depending on the situation. Something of a less strict implementation of Sonic Heroes' core idea.

Speaking of, both Mighty and especially Ray are great fun to use! The latter's going to be super interesting for time trials, you can build so much momentum with continuous gliding. I'm going to be miffed if they don't show up in Team Sonic Racing D:

Just bought the encore DLC myself and had a quick bash tonight, the character switching does seem like a great mechanic!

Haven't had a go with Ray yet but I'm already loving Mighty's addition.

I agree that the UFO stages have definitely increased in difficulty, in the original I didn't find them a challenge until maybe emerald 4 or 5 but here I'm struggling straight out of the gate! It's a pleasant change from replaying 1-3&K where I can pretty much ace all of the special stages with my eyes closed these days

Ahah I've gotten worse at a lot of the series' special stages over time, especially 2's as I tend to skip them on replays. CD's I'm pretty alright at, probably as I've revisited that more thanks to the Taxman port being on PC.

I do find with the hardest UFO stages you generally have to find the correct racing line, I think it was the 5th or 6th regular one that was especially mean. Only played the first four of encore, hoping they don't get too malicious :simper:

It'd be awesome if this tech were incorporated into a "Super Sonic Maker" type of official game.

That looks pretty sweet. Mario Maker was my favourite game on the Wii U by a mile so a Sonic version, even a fan one, could definitely fill a gap for me until Mario Maker Switch gets announced.

Funnily enough I find the S2 special stages to be the easiest these days - the layouts are practically etched into my brain from childhood!

I don't know if it's just a lack of practice compared to the amount of time I spent on the originals back in the day but I do find the UFO stages in Mania to be far more difficult in general. I only managed to get all emeralds on my Sonic run back when this first came out, back in the day I would have looked to 100% it with all characters but just couldn't hack it this time.

Again I guess familiarity is a problem - I still know where pretty much all the sign posts and giant rings are in S2 and S3&K so it's easier to get to the special stages in those, in Mania I'm lucky if I can remember where one of these is per zone!

That looks awesome! Sega should give these guys a job, too, by the looks of things. Have a couple of quality studios pumping out Classic Sonic goodness.

Meanwhile...

I think that Islands would be the ideal format for a Sonic 3D remake.

I had that game on the Master System! I completely forgot about it. I loved it back then.

Speaking of Mania, I got the retail version of it, haven't played it yet. The art book is a bit flimsy, but it's pretty cool.

I’ve just completed Sonic Mania and I have to say I feel little disappointed with the last level. It wasn’t as good as Sonic 2.

But it’s still a great game though. :)

This sent me down a weird hole: the very first forum I ever posted on regularly was Sonic HQ's Mobius Forums. Spent at least 3 or 4 years there, getting more and more jealous of the clique of 'cool' people who dominated everything.

Went back just now and amazingly the site is still going. The old forums are gone, with a small Discord community for the holdouts, and the site appears to be more of a personal effort than the Sonic juggernaut it was back in the day (they were the first western site to reveal Sonic Adventure apparently).

Time marches on.

A thought: Christian Whitehead, Headcannon et al were hired after proving themselves on the Sonic 2 port, and gave us Mania, the 2D Sonic game I've been dreaming of forever now. The Sonic Chaos remake looks absolutely outstanding, and presents Sega with an opportunity: full glorious remakes of every handheld-only 2D Sonic game, and after that, original 2D Sonic (and other Classic Sega IP) content. The sheer amount of good will that such a move would garner is mind boggling, it would be a veritable license to print money.

The Islands demo presents a similar opportunity to Sega: A chance to reverse many years of negative press, and potentially usher in a 3D Sonic golden age, and not necessarily with remakes.

The Sonic fan community has at times been the worst fan community around, but it has also drawn in some incredibly talented people, and if I were Sega, I'd be drawing up the job offers right now.

Finally got the mania plus dlc and am playing through plus mode for the first time.

It's so good, I love the new character swap mechanic, as mentioned above it's a great way to play as all the characters.

Hydrocity music is so good too, always a nostalgia highlight.
