That's what we COULD have had. If we didn't live in Europe.

USA only. I would have played that "SAY-GAA!" sound a *lot*, too  .

Shut it.

If there was a disc version but it came in a megadrive box, I'd be all over that.

How about a Mega Drive box with a QR code of the Download link.

For an edition that is tugging on the nostalgia strings, seeing a qr code in a box is just sad.

If Shovel Knight, Olli Olli, Terrania and a handful of other indie games can get disc releases then this can as well.

haha I was taking the piss, really this should have a physical option, what would be cool though if you got a mega drive box with a mega drive cartridge you plug a USB cable into that has the installation media on it.

Shame really, I was looking forward to buying a disc version and then downloading a day one patch before playing the game just like the way I used to play Sonic on the Megadrive. :(

Played this at EGX today, surpassed my cautiously optimistic expectations :D

I played studiopolis, which had elements of a sort-of greatest hits of Sonic tropes, with checkpoints from 1, star music and power-ups from 3 but the overall aesthetic stylings of a sort of 2+. The view seems to be a little closer, with the sprites and general size were a bit chunkier on screen than when you play Christian Whitehead's slick phone ports, and looked great without compromising navigability at speed. And the level felt whole and distinct and not like the sometimes sprawling samey-ness of Sonic CD's.

More importantly, the level was ace, with great music, a unique visual theme and lots and lots of pinballing fun with classic sonic weight and momentum. It's actually (whisper it) plays better than many of the old sonic levels do so today, without arbitrary instadeath traps and soaring jumps that land straight onto badniks etc. It is perhaps a little short on challenge but as a fun house of colour, candy-machines and springs and ?sonar radars all over the place, it rivalled the sheer joy of any level in Sonic 2 (which i just replayed the other day on my phone)!

There's also some new through-lines and bumper combinations which were fun to navigate.

Based on just the one level, it isn't the level-transforming, boss-chasing set-piece stacked epics of Sonic 3 or S&N, but more like a celebration of Sonic1/2-style purity.

And it was great :D

>>> Newsflash <<<

The collector's edition will be available in Europe, for PS4 and XBO. It's up for pre-order at Amazon for £79.99. I wondered if it was an imported version, but the packaging has a PEGI rating symbol.

It's too expensive for me to want to get one, but for Sonic fans it's great that it's available!

It sold out within hours, too :o . It's surprising just how fanatical Sonic fans are!

EDIT: Rather oddly, the game has been removed from Amazon's site. Hmmn.

I think it was likely put up by accident. If you click it in your orders (read on NeoGAF) it doesn't appear right now.

Sonic open world fan game:

Direct download to demo

Sonic Utopia is a fan made, open world Sonic the Hedgehog demo

...and you can sample it right now, if you like.

No matter how hard it tries, Sega can't seem to nail a modern Sonic game – at least, nothing has managed to match the affection we still hold for the '90s platformers. I'd argue that Sonic Generations was pretty decent, but overall, Sonic games are pretty average nowadays. There's no point sugarcoating it.

Sonic Utopia is a fan made game which imagines Sonic in an open world setting. As the video below demonstrates, it's more high-speed parkour than platformer, coming across like a meeting between SSX and Yooka Laylee. According to its creator Mr Lange, Utopia is "an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic's style and tie it together in a cohesive experience."

Although the game is still in a "raw state" you can download the demo and give it a go. (Demo link above)

I don't know what Sega will make of this, but optimistically, it'd be cool if this guy got a job making a halfway-decent official Sonic game. Imagine that?
