I was, to be fair, quite annoying.

I hold no animosity towards anyone that found me irritating when I was, like, 9-14. I was a cringey mix of precocious and argumentative, but perhaps more fundamentally I had childhood depression and social anxiety and the Internet was a release for me -- which made talking to me at best pretty weird.

I'm not sure I'm any less strange now but I feel better having spent the last seven years quietly banning my detractors err, umm, engaging in self-improvement.

Sorry, I feel partly responsible for this as when my mate and I were quasi MSN mentoring you in web stuff and pretended he had died and been replaced by himself with a different username.

I'm not sure I ever told you that, but thought it was time you should know anyway.

btw do you still write websites entirely in XML for some reason? I loved looking at that stuff

I have no idea what you're talking about but it sounds very funny so don't worry about it.

Was this during the "Ninty's Knight' phase? Hey, we all have our little rebellious periods. Some find sweet, sweet refuge in violence, in softcore drugs or in meaningless casual sex. That was your outlet. We were your canvas.

I honestly can't remember that much about being a kid on Old GR. I had a lot going on IRL at the time. (That's not an invitation to remind me. :slol: TBH it was a bad time for me so I don't really want to think too hard about it.)

Anyway, this isn't the Karl Thread so let's call time on that before it gets too embarrassing we stray too far off-topic.

To kind of shunt this back in the right direction, I just wanted to take a second to put a few thoughts out there on the merge now that it's underway.

Firstly and most importantly, it's fantastic to see so many faces I recognise from lurking on SONM making their way here. It feels to me like we really have that critical mass of people who will keep the SONM flame lit on here.

Here's a paraphrasing of something I said early on in discussions with OR:

Karl wrote:I'd like to look at this from the perspective of your members and community -- what can GRcade do to make the SONM gang feel as comfortable and welcomed as possible? I want to make GRcade something that they recognise as a successor to their community and feel a part of.

This has really formed the core idea of the merge for me, and I've been thinking a lot about our overlap as two communities.

What GRcade and SONM share, beyond even 'games' or 'Future', is that on each respective site there are members who have known each other for a decade or more and in many cases essentially grown up together. I think SONMers will be very familiar with the idea that a forum can feel like a big extended family and my hope is that ultimately that's where we'll find common ground.

I'm open to suggestions on how to make this work as best as it possibly can, and hopefully (as well as serving as a platform for greetings) this thread can now be used to field and discuss some of those suggestions.

To any SONM users reading this, if there are threads or traditions or particular pieces of branding (a blue theme?) that are important to you, please just let us know. Or if there's anything about GRcade that's offputting, tell us and we'll try to fix it.

Finally, I'm just going to ping OR in case he wants to follow-up on this post (but no worries if not!).

I'll just echo Karl's happiness at seeing so many SONMers making the jump over here. A big motivation for the merge was not wanting the community to feel abandoned or to see it simple disappear, and while I knew not everyone would make the jump here for various reasons, I feel like the (S)ONM legacy won't be dying out with so many familiar faces already here.

Yeah a lot of people seem to have made the jump already, dare say a few more might be waiting to make the jump when SONM closes its doors on the 11th of February.

This place seems pretty great in general Karl so it seems hard to make suggestions especially when everyone is proberbly used to what it's like.. on Sonm we had retro and modern games as separate sections and that was something I really liked as we had a retro purchases thread and then a modern equivalent etc, but I imagine for all the people who would like this others wouldn't.

Something not from Sonm but another forum I like is a participated button, you press it and it basically shows you all the threads you have posted in that now have new replies.

This might help

On the index there is a retro tag you can click, this only shows you retro threads. Same in Games section. You can also filter to "other" (which is just no tag) essentially leaving you with just "current games".

There's still participated topics. Hit the menu button with the 3 horizontal lines, this brings up searches for "your posts" and all new replies there will be highlighted in red.

We have tags, maybe some tags for "Retro gaming" would work.

There is a "Your Posts" page under the three line button on the grey bar, that shows you all the treads you have posted in, if it has a red icon there are new posts and clicking it takes you to the first unread posts, you can also get to "your posts" in the menu on the app.

That probbaly hte nearest the that funcitonality we have right now.

Yeah I'd noticed the tag thing and it's not bad, I think I just like retro being separate as I'm so retro obsessed and I used to win Retro board poster of the year all the time on SONM lol

As for the participated thing bingo thanks for the explanations that really helps me

We were like that in the past, but as our own activity decreased and the separate sections kind of split activity up and meant people would click on what was "general games chat" and leave the rest as graveyards, we merged it together. Which I think has worked out well in the long run :)

You may all know this already, but if you click the speech bubble next to the topic title it will take you to the last post you read.

I was surprised a few months back that a number of people weren't aware of this.
