This is not the norm, and is the best option - it simply won't happen any other way.

2 million is nothing for a game of this size.

Regardless, this is the only way it'll happen , if you like it then pledge.

That recent Castlevania pseudo-sequel is the same, right? The kickstarter is only a fraction of the overall cost, basically existing to garner interest and allow the devs to convince funding from elsewhere. Igarashi explained it himself in the kickstarter video.

Don't delude yourself, this is the same company funding a wonky game about a flying dog.

All this kickstarter serves to do is lower costs for Sony. It doesn't achieve anything else. Especially if even with a kickstarter the project is not possible without funding.

Kickstarter money only serves to lower the amount Sony invests as the total goes up, it does nothing to actually make the game more likely to come out as the strawberry floating kickstarter's only been posted in the first place because of collaboration with Sony.

Exactly! It's the most stable way of knowing if there's a market for your project/product, since people actually have to part with their money.

Why wouldn't Sony, a company which isn't in the rudest of health, not use alternate ways to fund the game?

Man, read previous posts.

It's not 'we need help funding it', it's yu suzuki saying 'i need you to prove to sony that you'll actually buy my gooseberry fool if they fund it'. Get it?

That may or may not be the case, my point is I can see why Sony may want to go that route when they have the option.

They probably won't give much of a strawberry float.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is looking like it could be my game of the show so far.[/quote]
Horizon looked totally amazing.

A game still set for 2015 but wasn't at presser: Persona 5. (US release which EUers should be able to buy and play via US PSN)

I get that, but similar to why you say that (sony is for-profit), sony are just mitigating risk. It wouldn't make sense if they didn't do it this way.

But i agree, a good old fashioned release is most desired, but shenmue is an exception.

Sony do have games coming this year, its like they did the exact opposite of MS and prioritised games further out to get a reaction. Its one way to go I suppose.

Probably went something like this:

"Hey, investors, can I have $15m to fund this Shenmue III?"
"Will it make money?"
"It's hard to say. There's a vocal hardcore fanbase, but this kind of title is unproven in today's space."
"Sounds a little risky. What's the closest equivalent?"
"There's these Yakuza games, but they rarely get released outside of Japan because they don't sell well"
"So why do you need $15m for a Japan-only game? Just pump out something cheap and move on"
"We couldn't do that. It would seriously frustrate the vocal hardcore fanbase I mentioned earlier. We'd lose an awful lot of goodwill and most likely be pressured to do it anyway"
"Much too risky, sorry. But I'll tell you what, if you can get some proof that this thing is popular enough to turn a profit, and if you can provide the first $2m, we'll fund it for $13m"

Good point man. This and MGS5 are my 2015 games of choice. Can't wait for p5. Maybe at the next show in a month.

They kinda are. As far as multinationals go at least. Didn't they record a $2bn loss at the end of last year?

Already said they wouldn't have a conference at Gamescom on account of it being so close to E3 this year.

Is that some kind of London slang?

"How are you feeling today?"

"Pretty rude."
