I've stated why I posted the tweet several times. Your argument added nothing new and I've nothing else to add.

Let's imagine that was actually a scene from Uncharted. Nathan Drake is dancing and smooching with his girlfriend and it then flashes to him extinguishing the life of some poor bloke with a rusty knife in a brutal PTSD-inducing fashion. The audience would just understand that it's showing that Drake has to go through some heinous gooseberry fool to survive. That would be perfectly acceptable. But switch out Nathan Drake for Ellie Whatshername and suddenly it's queer baiting.

It's like the LGBT community (nebulous though it is) wants the sexuality of protagonists to be a non-issue and for everything to just be normalised and accepted (which it totally should), but then when developers try to normalise it they get gooseberry fool for it.

I'm not as articulate as others but am I making sense here?

I tried posting something several times and kept deleting. Denster and Preezy said it better than I could.

Ok, bear in mind this isn't my argument I'm defending and that I posted the tweet as I thought it an interesting perspective...

Straight romance scene in a game =/= queer romance scene in a game. One is the norm, one is very much not. An inclusion of a straight romance is almost a given in many stories, an inclusion of a queer romance is a specific choice. Films with both hard right or hard left leaning narratives can and do include straight romances. Gay romances are the domain of the left alone. By including and fore fronting the gay relationship of Ellie in an E3 conference setting, the person who tweeted saw this as a facile marketing ploy to drag in interest from those people who so rarely see themselves represented like that on screen. She took it not as an inclusive move, but as an exploitation of her minority.

I don' t think that's a ridiculous thing to think.

You're missing the point, the trailer is about Ellie further losing her innocence.

The original game was about love, at the beginning of the trailer she has love which is taken away according to some ResetEra members resulting in her wanting to "find and kill every last one of them".

Everything I wanted to say about that tweet is up there /\

It's not my argument to make, I just took against it being called 'ridiculous' and 'click bait' when it's clearly a genuine concern this person has.

Was it good?

- Started in a dumb church Sony built to demo The Last of Us. Opened by Gustavo Santaolalla. Cutscene into gameplay into cutscene. HUD looks same, crafting is back, no clickers shown.
- People then had to move from the church into the theatre so we had to put up with 20 minutes intermission where they showed COD BLOPS 4 and repeated a bunch of announcements they’d made earlier in the week. Destiny 2 dlc featured
- Back to the show and Ghost of Tsushima for a gameplay demo set on day 9 of the Mongol invasion, suggesting the game will advance as the invasion progresses. Sword combat, grappling and a few special moves shown. Looked incredible.
- Control trail shown, new game by remedy. Looks very Quantum Break like.
- Resident Evil 2 trailer
- Justin Royland, Rick and Morty Guy, game shown.
- Kingdom Hearts 3 shown for the 3rd time this E3. Pirates of the Caribbean features heavily.
- Death Stranding trailer into gameplay followed by cutscene stuff. Lea Seydoux and Lyndsey Wagner announced to be in the cast, the former featured heavily in the footage.
- Nioh 2 announced
- SpiderMan demoed.

Everything was interspersed with Dreams musical vignettes. General consensus seems to be that the games look amazing but the presentation was hard botched.

Not sure what happened to the deep dives, it seemed pretty standard trailer demo stuff to me.

An inclusion of anything in a story is a "specific choice" - the story doesn't exist until someone writes it and they choose what is going to be part of it.

The problem that I believe you (or the tweet that you have referred to) are alluding to is the suggested reasoning behind the choice of a gay relationship in the game - that this has been done for marketing reasons rather than story reasons. That is a supposition - how can anyone know the creative process that went into TLOU 2 and the decision to have this aspect to the story? What if this was simply the story the writer wanted to tell, should they not be allowed to do that?

Furthermore how can anyone include more diverse relationships in their storylines if this is the reaction? Is there an arbiter responsible for deciding when it is and isn't okay to have a same sex relationship in a game story? We shouldn't have to wait until someone gives the "all clear" for more diversity in game storylines, people can and should be attempting to change things right here and now.

A really disjointed conference overall.

Cutting to those plebs at the desk constantly was really annoying.

I did love the look of Ghost of Tsushima, though and TLOU 2 looked great but I still haven't played the first one.

strawberry float off back to ratchet and clank then.

By far, by far, the most hostility I receive on this forum is by discussing or pointing out issues like the tweet quoted. Some people become incredibly threatened when people in minorities take umbrage at their portrayal by video games.

It's like I broke your toy.

Also, you missed this one which I'm sure you would have enjoyed equally

My derision was aimed at the tweet, not you. Are for the second one,I saw that but I'm not going defend sexual harassment.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

Decent conference content wise, liked the look of Ghost of Tsushima & TLOU2. Have to see more of Death Stranding. Other than Remedy's game not interested in the 3rd party stuff. The lack of release dates seems like we'll be seeing 3 out of 4 deep dive games next E3 again. Poor format which was alleviated by being to skip through the BS this morning. Hope Sony take note of the criticism.

I still can't believe they signed off on that format. Although, watching game journo twitter in meltdown was funny.

Samuel_1 wrote:What a bizarre showing from Sony. The format was terrible, especially in the first 3rd, it was so awkward. However, the games on display look incredible, TLOU, Spidey, Tsushima all looked utterly brilliant and I can't wait to play them.

Sony did the right thing by pre-annoucing that the conference would focus on the big four games - it was a somewhat open way of saying 'lower your expectations' and I did! It might be the first Sony conference that I didn't stay up to watch since... I can't remember when. But I do remember staying up to watch a Sony conference fronted by Kaz Hirai that had a shitty stream in one corner of my 14" CRT TV, I might even have been using a 56k modem!

The format was odd, they had two venues. Firstly showing The Last of Us then an interlude whilst the crowd made their way to the second venue. What the strawberry float was that about? In fact, as I type, I think it was meant to replicate the venue of the TLOU2 opening scene from the trailer. Bizarre!

Also, not many third party titles shown at all. This must have been deliberate.

Now the big four games show Sony are masters of the third-person narrative action adventure - and the face-capture technology that helps them show actors' humanity. I watched a few conference reviews, Kinda Funny & Colin Last Stand. Moriarty did question why Bethesda had a conference when they were not revealing much that was new, this same question can be pointed at Sony. But I think the answer is obvious, E3 is a major platform to push games into the public consciousness. What Sony did with the big four is get the audience emotionally involved with the characters and stories so that they will be more willing to buy the final games. So this worked.

I don't want to negatively spin one of the company's great strengths but I do think that it would be good if they diversified with some of their first-party triple-A games. Perhaps a quality FPS or FPS RPG.

Sitting at home, watching it this morning not many new games were shown, there was no buzz, no excitement and no surprises, so I will give it a 6/10. But Sony did the right thing for their business by focusing on the upcoming PlayStation exclusives.

2018 is definitely an off year but it does make me wonder if the next-gen will come earlier then my expectation of 2021. Perhaps 3 of the games will be the last PS4 exclusives of 2019, and in early 2020 we see the PS5 reveal.
