Sony lost $1.035 billion this year.

The gaming division lost $612 million this year, but this is less than half of what they lost last year, so the division is improving financially.

PS3 hardware sales are up, PSP hardware sales are up slightly, and PS2 hardware sales are down significantly.
PS3 software sales are up significantly, PSP software sales are down, and PS2 software sales are down significantly.
The PS3 sold 10 million units, the PSP sold 14 million units, and the PS2 sold 8 million units in 2008.
Sony is expecting to sell 3 million more PS3's this year than they did in either 2007 or 2008. They are also expecting to sell 1 million more PSPs and 3 million less PS2s than they did in 2008.
PSN sales are expected to triple in 2009.

No, they're still getting worse, but I see what you're trying to say. 8-)

Well, that will be the PS2 pretty much dead now. At least they are selling more PS3's and PSP's but loosing money is still not a great thing to be doing.

Suzz loses job and has reduced purchasing power.
Sony profits plummet.

There's a link here, I know it.

They sold 9M PS3's in 2007 and 10M in 2008 but this year they are expecting to sell 13M, which suggests there might be a price drop soon. I think maybe around September they will drop the price.

They could barely manage any real increase between 07 and 08 yet they are expecting to sell that number now that there's a recession? I'm skeptical.

Have PS3 sales not shown a consistent decrease so far in terms of '09 versus '08? Unless there is a price drop some time soon they'll surely have there work cut out to catch up let alone overtake last years sales?

They need a price drop or they're strawberry floated really.

Oh and don't all the big three (bar Nintendo perhaps...) loose millions yearly through gaming?

Not quite. MS and Sony lose millions through hardware, but aim to make it up through software. It's a loss-leader business model for them.

I think MS did start making a profit out of the games division for a period but have gone back to making a loss thanks to moneygeddon™

Yikes!

There's certainly a money sink somewhere inside Sony.

I know what it is too. 8-) :shifty:

What, and lose even more money/make less profit per unit?

My money is on PS3, PSP2, PSPhone, Home, Killzone 2, GT5, PS2 with Wii-style remotes or some sort of PS3 hybrid does-it-all device.

In regards to Sony as a whole, they actually predicted a loss of 150bn yen earlier this year, so this figure has come in considerably less. In the grand scheme of things, the gaming division isn't doing too badly.

To put it in perspective, Hitachi lost an incredible 787.3 billion. Nonetheless, this is Sony's first loss in well over a decade.

Wow, the PSP is the 8th best selling console of all time and yet PSP software sales are still atrocious.

Edit - for those wondering, the PS3 sits in 15th, just behind the original Xbox. The stats are here, but these figures more or less confirm them.

Heh I remember when the 360 first came out one of their PR heads at the time predicted that it would have a lifetime sales total of 1 billion. That's 1 in 6 people on earth would have one.

Well at least they're doing better than the PS3
