Well with the Nintendo Wii rumored to increase to £199.99 by some retailers, the gap between the consoles in price would make the PS3 seem more attractive.

That Wii price increase isn't a rumour, it's very much confirmed. Wii display boxes in Game labelled £179.99 already have "Saving £20" notices on them, along with small print about the new R.R.P. being £199.99, and how that will become the standard sale price some time in the near future. The PS3 being within £100 of the Wii seems a bit bizarre when you think about it, chop £50 off that, and it seems like an absolute steal.

Just watch Hot Deals, a decent PS3 deal turns up from time to time. I got my 40GB PS3 from Play almost a year ago for £218 thanks to Hot Deals.

I'm sorry but that really is taking the piss, everyone knows they're already making a considerable profit on the Wii and they do this! Outrageous, especially in this climate, I hope the public's response is some sort of boycott, but I can't see it.

Anyhoo, I think I £50 price cute would be significant enough to attract a fair amount of new users, of course it wouldn't have the effect of £100, but after the losses they've just announced, Sony are clearly going to be keeping an eye on costs.

The price drop will coincide with the release of the PS3 Slim.

Nintendo in 'company acting to maximise profits' shocker. Anyone would think that was their raison d'etre.

Of course it is, but come on, there's no reasonable reason for a price increase form the consumers point of view; the Pound has finally risen against the Yen recently and it's not as though Nintendo's manufacturing costs have gone up, the reverse if anything. I think it's inexcusable.

It's only inexcusable if the customers vote with their wallets. When the price goes up, I hope people do hold off from buying the Wii.

They won't, like in the same way we all didn't cancel our Sky subscriptions when that went up.

The average customer won't even be aware of the increase as it will be hidden within the costing of console+game bundles.

...which was presumably because we all thought that we were getting enough value to make the purchase worthwhile, even at the increased price.

Moral outrage in the face of a price-rise for an utterly discretionary purchase such as a Wii is an odd reaction. If people don't like the price they don't have to buy. That's really all there is to it. Simples.

I don't know about everyone else, but I just fumed quietly and continued to pay.
