Pre-ordered. I was very impressed with the sound quality on the 2.0 headset, though they felt very fragile. Mind you, support for the Companion App hasn't been particularly good.

"100+ virtual speakers"

If you're talking about 'virtual' anything, you can just whack any number on there, surely?

If these can be used without a usb key on an iphone then I might get it. The gold headset is great on the ps4.

It has to be a truly amazing level of immersion before I even consider being truly immersed.

Other games that will use 3D audio include MLB The Show 17, Days Gone, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Credit to Sony on the price - it's a direct conversion ($160).

That band on the top better be made of actual platinum.
I've ordered these as the gold set is great and this seems like a decent upgrade.

I really like my Golf headset though it's not perfect by any means. Might consider these if they come down in price and are generally thought to be a substantial upgrade over the Gold.

I love the Gold headset; I find it very comfortable and the sound quality is excellent. I grabbed some at the £50 price point and they've been terrific value.

This new edition looks cool although £120 seems, to me, like quite a lot of dough. Of course, headset prices can be pretty crazy (Beats, Apple etc :dread: ) so perhaps these are in fact well-priced  .

There's apparently a (rather big) caveat to the 3D Audio...it doesn't work wirelessly according to Engadget, and in fact needs to be plugged in...to what I'm not quite sure (the controller?): https://www.engadget.com/2016/12/15/son ... anuary-17/

Do they just mean when using a VR headset, or when enabling 3D for everything?

Lol. I see no reason to move away from the rather splendid PS3/4/Vita compatible 2.0 cans I got a year or so ago

I may be misunderstanding, KK, but I'm not sure that you do have to connect the headset via a wired connection in order to use the 3D sound feature... unless you're using PSVR. That Engadget story refers to a PS Blog USA site that is talking solely about PSVR.

It would indeed be pretty daft to advertise a wireless 3D sound headset that you had to connect via a wire to use the 3D sound function :) .

TechRadar

Despite some underwhelming moments, Sony’s new PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset is a great-sounding, ultra-comfortable pair of cans that can make some of the best looking games sound even better.

There’s plenty nice to say about Sony’s new pair of Platinum Wireless Headphones. They have exceptional – and balanced – audio performance and the mic sounds “above average” according to the people we spoke to. There’s also 3D Audio support that creates 100 virtual speakers, though honestly the headset doesn’t have the same panache in this area that you’d find on the competition’s pair of cans.

Speaking of, a lot could be done in the design department to make them look a lot less massive sitting on top of your head, and despite two metal alloy bars floating across the top, the headset’s plastic sections feel fragile.

All said, though, it’s hard to find a better value headset that’s this easy to use and sounds this good overall. Those qualities definitely exist at a higher price, but if you’re looking for something you can set up without a fuss, Platinum is a gamer’s best friend.

FOR
Incredible audio performance
Ultra-plushy earpads
Great value

AGAINST
Obtrusive design
Surround sound lacks panache
Plastic parts feel fragile

4/5

Stuff Review

This is by far the best PS4 headset that I’ve used - and I’ve used a lot of them.

Unlike its predecessor, the Platinum Wireless Headset does an awesome job with surround sound, particularly when games are specifically designed to take advantage of the dedicated 3D Audio mode. You’d need to spend a heck of a lot on home cinema kit to get a similar experience, and it would be about a million times less neat.

But it’s a real shame that the overall design has been made less distinctive and more fiddly, and I can see that putting quite a lot of people off, particularly given the £130 price tag.

Still, if you want the best PS4 surround sound experience available without spending a fortune and filling your room with speakers, this is it.

Verdict: The best PS4 surround sound experience available without spending a fortune and filling your room with speakers

Good Stuff
Very impressive surround sound, especially when games are specifically designed for the 3D Audio mode
A really neat, genuinely wireless solution

Bad Stuff
Looks and feels cheaper than its predecessor
Fiddly switches and buttons

4/5

Disappointing to hear the build quality is even worse than last time. :dread:

Very positive Digital Foundry review with the massive caveat that the only game which supports 3D audio is Uncharted 4.

Had a set pre-ordered but cancelled them because I wasn't sure how much extra I'd get out of them.

Going back towards picking up a pair now...might wait till they are available a bit cheaper somewhere though.
