VR isn't great for arcade games. Arcade games are inherently social, and VR cuts you off from interaction with your friends.

Some of the old Virtuality arcade games went so far as to actually include a monitor so you could see what the player saw inside the game.

Was it Minority Report that had that Arcade in with seperate booths for people to 'play' in? Thats the sort of thing I mean. Imagine doing a VR-CoD sort of thing instead of going paintballing with mates.

I just hope we see a port of Streets of Laredo. Bagsy Dangerous Dan McGrew

The PlayStation firm has officially slapped a November 11 Japan release date on the futuristic-looking visor, called 'HMZ- T1', and it's set to keep the same specs seen earlier in the year.

While the exterior design has changed slightly (it's not so slick now), the headset still boasts a pair of 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones.

The HMZ-T1 includes HDMI input and output (so you can take off the headset and continue on a TV) and is set to retail for 60,000 yen (£481).

Sony's exec deputy president Hiroshi Yoshioka said of the device in January, "As a big gamer myself, I couldn't be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score."

It will never be popular so long as the headsets are huge strawberry float off things like that. Once they get to a the size of goggles you can fit in yoru pocket, maybe, but until then it's just impractical.

Have to start somewhere though, as far as I know this will be the first ever mainstream retail headset.

I would be more interested in this then some Move crap. However I imagine it will be expensive.

 Beautifully done.

I might well import one of these - genuinely - and test it for some tech site or mag.

I think I'll pass, I don't really fancy wearing one of those for prolonged periods of time.

I'd probably be interested in something like this in years to come once the technology gets a little less obtrusive, cheaper and more widely supported.

The current Sony active lens 3D glasses are about a third of the weight and considerably smaller than the ones they launched with a year or so ago and they have a better battery life. I don't think it'll be long at all until these headsets are similar in size to a pair of 3D glasses. I'm excited to give them ago, as the article says it's as if you're looking at a 750inch 3D image. With that in mind the price is pretty neat too..

I've read in loads of places that 10 years from now the idea of watching media on a screen will be obsolete. Apple are already looking at ways to fit your iphone in a pair of specs with the glasses essentially giving you a real life HUD.

We currently have a battle between the electronics manufacturers for control of the TV and the device in your pocket. This will transition to being the battle for the glasses you wear.

I must admit that not being tied to a TV is very appealing.

How hard would it be to attach a PS Move to this and use it as a head motion tracker?

Might work well with Kinect too, especially the Forza 4 gallery mode.

The Virtual Boy might have a few things to say about that.

Good luck to 'em. I doubt they'll make any money out of it, but we'll see.

Sorry... is this a screen or an actual VR thing? Has that sort of tech (ie a screen in some glasses) not been available for a while anyway?

Yeah... these:

If you want to not be tied to a telly, get a set of these (I don't know if they're any good or not...)

I was playing Dead Nation last night on my 42" Plasma and I was probably sat a bit close as my eyes were tired and it's a dark game - I was finding it was pretty hard to track all the action on the screen.

I don't see the attraction, therefore, of attempting to play on a screen that appears to be gigantic. Your eyes will be cream crackered after just minutes of playing.

The difference between something like the Vuzix and something like this is that a VR device should incorporate an accelerometer (like in the Wiimote) for input that allows it to track your head and neck movement in the game.

This does all the VR output but none of the input, for now you'll need a games controller (pad, Move, Kinect) to interact with it. As far as I know this was the case with those early 90s prototypes, they required a flight joystick to move and change view.

By the sounds of things Sony will be releasing a PlayStation branded version in the near future making use of gyros/accelerometers and all their Move tech. This will allow you to move your head around the view the 3D world, as was talked out in the early 90s but never shown.
