Actually mental. Who the strawberry float is going to pay that for what is, essentially, a gimmick at the moment.

Madness.

And ontop of that you need pretty much a GTX 970 as an absolute minimum.

£529... wow, that's a touch more than I'd anticipated. I'd expect that a fairly meaty PC would be required, too?

I suspect that other VR headsets (Sony, HTC etc) will be in a similar pricing ballpark. VR is gonna be quite a niche market unless the costs come down pretty sharpish. Developers won't spend out a lot of money on making games unless the market is there to earn that money back.

"Professional" games journalists losing their ever-loving gooseberry fool on Twitter over this. Everyone with half a brain knew these would be expensive pieces of kit, that's just what happens. The price will drop in the years to come - like Blu Ray players, HD TVs and currently with 4K TVs - and then it will (maybe) find mess appeal. Plus, there's always the Gear VR, which is pretty damn good and reasonably priced.

VR has a long road ahead of it

I'd pay up to a grand for Vive because that's actually high-tech.

Oculus is basically just a webcam and a stripped down mobile phone in a cheap plastic housing with some low-grade earphones. The markup is ludicrous.

I'd expected closer to £300 to be honest. I'm out for the time being.

I'm out not because of the price but because the Vive looks a better package. If the Vive is launched at the same price I will still get it.

Yeah it was expected to be expensive but Oculus did spin a web of lies with all their "close to dev kit" bullshit.

I thought they'd be selling at cost. Guess giving away 7000 for free was accounted into that.

Weren't the dev kits something like £200 or so? Are these really different enough to justify an additional £300?

Apparently there is going to be an ama on reddit with Palmer Luckey, that may be an interesting read tomorrow.

I was always undecided between Oculus and Vive, but leaning towards Vive. That was when I expected Oculus to be around £300 with Vive being maybe £400ish.

If the Vive is going to be even more expensive than this I can't see myself getting one this year. Perhaps 2017 if the price drops to a more reasonable level, but I don't see how they can do that without pissing off the early adopters. 2018/19 is when I think we'll see a more mass-market price for these.

I just bought one of these for about £15:

Apparently it is possible through a series of programs to create a pseudo-oculus effect through streaming from your pc to the phone you put inside, with another creating the effect of sterescopic 3D. I will have a go, probably at the weekend and report back.

What does the Vive offer over the Rift that makes it worth so much more? A pair of fancy wiimotes?

Valve support.

And half life 3 timed exclusivity.

So what happened to this being in line with the dev kit price of £299?

Wasn't quite expecting it to be that price  Thought it might end up being just a bit more than what they charged for the dev kits.

The controllers, the front-facing camera and the laser positioning "mini-arena" setup. It's very much geared towards being an environment you can move about in and "touch", while Oculus is more like somewhere you can sit or stand and observe (which the Vive is also suited to).

The Oculus Touch controllers will bring them on closer terms, but I'm still convinced the robustness of HTC's tracking setup is going to be on another level to the Rift's.

Also, I have a lot more confidence in HTC delivering solid hardware than I do with Oculus, given how ropey the DK2 has been for me.
