You know, I never did watch that. Always meant to, but never got around to it.

I'd recommend it but with the proviso that you cut it some major slack as it's an old film and the special effects may not be even slightly special any more. The story was pretty good from what I remember though.

Hmm...yeah ok. Not so much.

A case of selective memory I think.

That could be true as I have a really shitty memory and my most vivid memory of the film is at the end where
he's trapped inside the computer and he's getting "Access Denied" from all the escape points and going bonkers.
so yes it's a rental at best maybe :shifty: .

The film's worth watching for the early 90s interpretation of what the future will be like, particularly the art-style (alot like EDGE's early cover art).

They solved that problem on Fringe with flotation tanks.

It's a hell of a lot of work to go to just for a round of Halo.

Ideally we'd just substitute the flow of sensory data into the brain from the real body with phantom data from the in-game avatar. But yeah, looooooong way away.

Actually, i'd rather have something more like the EVA Spartan helmet for peripheral vision. Should be eminently practical with an OLED display.

Hardly copying the Virtual Boy is it!

Yeah, this one's white!

Wow, you really are a pessimistic stick in the mud. Considering the tech involved will be be almost 2 decades more advanced than the Virtual Boy and that a fair few innovations have been made in that time maybe you could wait until some concrete details emerge before you shoot the idea down completely.

Can I claim parody here without invoking the Staydead Defence? No?

Oh well.

Nah, by the sound of it, it gives you a sensation of touch, but it still can't prevent you from putting your hand through it.

Awesome, but still quite some way off Holodeck level.

VR, what is this? 1992?

First 3d now this, I wonder which technological dead-end they're going to dredge up next. Smell-o-vision?

We saw the command prompts and everything.

So yes! Not only was I in the "Awooga Posse", but I got to meet Inspector Morse's boss. How cool is that?

Heh. The best game-based gameshow was that one based on Total War - Time Commanders I think. Not so much for the game but more for the way the workplace based teams would start off all positive and get more and more fractious and bitchy as their plans began to unravel. Just like any good team-building exercise really :) .

Could you kindly ensure that Chakotay gets left in the Delta Quadrant? The others can come back.

NickSCFC wrote:They probably killed VR with that piece of gooseberry fool. VR was slowly gaining interest as a concept, Nintendo release the Virtual Boy, create a stigma and seemingly kill VR overnight. Well done.

The Virtual Boy wasn't a VR device, it was a 3D device. It would be somewhat impressive if Nintendo was able to kill an entire idea simply by releasing a console that shared part of the idea's name. The helmet shape was due to the nature of the tech they were using to create the 3D image, it wasn't to let you "look around a virtual world" or anything that would traditionally be associated with a VR Visor.

In saying that, I think VR should die in a fire so if they have managed to do that then well done to them.

Tell that to MCN, he was the one claiming Sony were copying it.
