I'd rather the entire Voyager mission was scrubbed so they don't ruin the Borg.

LEAVE VOYAGER ALONE!

That headset looks like it'll keep falling off... and why is this any different from those glasses, which were a lot less bulky? :?

I think i'm becomming a luddit as it's yet another idea that doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Another uncomfortable way to not enjoy games. 3d but worse.

Actually, I could kinda see the headset and handheld controller format becoming popular for FPS, with head tilting replacing the right analogue stick (or the mouse in a mouse and keyboard setup).

Especially if you could streamline out much of the rest of the hardware, and deliver the game (say, Call of Duty, which I namecheck because Activision has a history with hardware packages) in OnLive fashion.

Would RSI become an issue with the sort of constant head movement that'd be required for an fps?

To truly have a VR system, they need to somehow have the brain directly give inputs. Or maybe a body suit, gloves etc that sense when you you move.

The brain thing is a long way off but that body suit could work. Im a genius clearly.

Remember all those accidents supposedly caused by flying Wii-motes and flailing arms? That was with people who could actually see what they were doing.

They'll have to ship each system with some sort of padded cage.

Sony working on VR First Person Shooter

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/31 ... ty-gaming/

Mick Hocking, senior director at Sony Worldwide Studios, told Develop the firm is testing virtual reality technology with a number of gaming projects, including a first person shooter.

"We've got a new head mounted display [in development] that we showed at Consumer Electronics Show," he said. "At the moment it's just a head-mounted display; the head isn't being tracked - but that's something we're doing R&D on.

"I have to say, what we've done in the R&D projects has just been fantastic," he added. "We're working with a couple of games at Sony that are experimenting with virtual reality type experiences."

Hocking said earlier this year that the technology to realise the virtual reality dreams of the 20th century is now available.

"We've now got the power to do it, we've got the screen resolution to do it, we've got the processing power to update fast enough so that we can have very, very immersive experiences on head-mounted displays in gaming in the not too distant future," he said.

"Being in a virtual world where I can see my virtual hands or a virtual gun, with all the things we can do in the gaming world, is going to be absolutely amazing."

You don't HAVE to wear it, it's just something else to add variety to gaming.

It's too early for VR; headsets aren't lightweight or unobtrusive enough yet.

OLED should make them practical. It's just a case of making them cost effective enough now, but that should be a no brainer; the technology has lot of useful applications in mobiles and tablets, and there's a lot of headway into wireless video technologies too.

Indeed, you can see a clear hint of the future in the Wii-U. What we're describing here is basically that in a different form factor.

They did manage to generate 3D graphics on a head-mounted display, that was two decades ago, lightyears ahead of Sony. :shifty:

If this gives the effect of a massive screen (like some PC peripherals of ye olde days) Hd, and maybe 3d, and it actually works to improve the gameplay experience it could be phenomenal.

Imagine playing Skyrim where your characters vision is controlled by your head-movement. The headset wouldn't impede the game it would actually immerse you even more into it. You actually see a full-sized game world. This is the dream! But for it to have any success it would have to be packed in with a new console and I imagine Microsoft & Sony are going to be trying to cut costs with the next-gen.

Sony need to licence the tech to Namco and SEGA ASAP. This could be the tech that revitalises Arcades.

VR isn't great for arcade games. Arcade games are inherently social, and VR cuts you off from interaction with your friends.

Some of the old Virtuality arcade games went so far as to actually include a monitor so you could see what the player saw inside the game.
