The Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality headset that lets players step inside their favorite games and virtual worlds.

The Rift uses custom tracking technology to provide ultra-low latency 360° head tracking, allowing you to seamlessly look around the virtual world just as you would in real life. Every subtle movement of your head is tracked in real time creating a natural and intuitive experience.

The Oculus Rift creates a stereoscopic 3D view with excellent depth, scale, and parallax. Unlike 3D on a television or in a movie, this is achieved by presenting unique and parallel images for each eye. This is the same way your eyes perceive images in the real world, creating a much more natural and comfortable experience.

The Oculus Rift delivers a high-end virtual reality experience at an affordable price. The Rift is also designed to be as comfortable and lightweight as possible for long play sessions.

The Oculus Rift provides an approximately 100° field of view, stretching the virtual world beyond your peripheral vision. Your view of the game is no longer boxed in on a screen and is only limited by what your eyes can see. The combination of the wide field of view with head-tracking and stereoscopic 3D creates an immersive virtual reality experience.

VR headsets need to be featherlight and very comfortable to wear, and that CES one looks neither.

The technology is close though

Early 90s tech:

Low resolution
Low polygons
2D
Joystick input
Low refresh rates

New tech:

HD
3D
High refresh rates
Motion control
Head tracking
Motion sensing (gyroscope ect)
Motion control

The biggest stumbling block for domestic VR will be litigation.

Remember all those accidents supposedly caused by flying Wii-motes and flailing arms? That was with people who could actually see what they were doing.

They'll have to ship each system with some sort of padded cage.

On the other hand an FPS could be played like Killzone 3 on PS Move. The nunchuck controlling walking/running, and the Move controlling aiming/firing. You could do right stick movement by moving your head, though you'd be limited in an armchair of course.

virtual reality? Again? really? :fp:

AR has some kind of future, I think. But VR? Not till we can realistically bypass the eye as a human input device. I just can't see mapping real movements into a virtual space, while dealing with the obstacles in actual space ever being a viable endeavor for anything other than say, movie watching. A "virtual theater" headset for movie-watching might work, but that's about the limit, I think.

So now it's Sony's turn to make a Virtual Boy. Of all the Nintendo things to copy, Sony.

Hardly copying the Virtual Boy is it! If Nintendo launched something 20 years before the technology was anywhere near ready just to claim anyone else who does VR is copying then that's pretty retarded.

They probably killed VR with that piece of gooseberry fool. VR was slowly gaining interest as a concept, Nintendo release the Virtual Boy, create a stigma and seemingly kill VR overnight. Well done.

the virtusl boy was as much a victim of VR as the other way around.

Frankly, Virtuality was overpromising and underdelivering with their massively expensive hardware... There was no way nintendo were going to be.able to deliver with.so much less.

What was the 90s VR arcade tech called?

I think with modern tech it might have more of a chance at working now, not sure about a home device though.

Considering how far we've come since those early 90s concepts have come this could bring total immersion. Those old sets just had people navigating areas full of cubes with a fighter jet style joystick. Imagine the headset mixed with Kinect or Move with full headtracking and photorealistic graphics.

One of the main issues was that the device had to be adjusted to each individual's focal point. It was cumbersome to do then, and I can't imagine it being any less so now.

Wasn't it just a little slidy thing similar to the 3D slider on the 3DS?

I've got one, but I can't remember :fp:

Any sense of immersion will be quickly lost thanks to a complete lack of haptic feedback.

I think their was a slidy thing to move the screens back and forth, and a twisty thing to adjust the distance between the screens.

I think it was actually mostly done with mirrors, actually, which *sounds* incredibly lame, but is really quite an impressive technical achivement.

There weren't any "screens" such. It was a single line LED that was used to build up complete images.

I'm imagining people who are now blind in the real world flailing about like idiots and trashing their living room.
