Oculus Rift thread - £399 Rift & Touch controller bundle!

Palmer has apologised for "handling the messaging poorly" which is pretty good for a person in his position. Would be better if he just admitted that he lied.

Actually Ive changed my mind. I think this is a smart business decision. Think of the amount they are going to make scalping all of the lonely neckbeards who just cant wait to boot up their anime sex simulators.

Problem is competition.

According to nVidia the install base for gaming PCs that can handle this is a 3rd of PS4's.

When you factor in the fact that these companies have to make a profit on hardware (unlike Sony) and that the PCs are expensive then the future doesn't look that promising for VR on PC.

I expect PlayStation and Samsung Galaxy to dominate the market.

Not true. PC hardware isnt static. What is this generations 970 is next generations 1060/50. Same again the year after. And the year after that.

Going by reports the next bump should be better than the last generation since they're finally shrinking chips. Time will tell.

What Im getting at here is that the trend for the last 15 or so years has been that each year a new chipset rolls around and the features and performance that were previously in the high end bracket drop into the mainstream range.

Interesting thing in the "are you ready for oculus" thing, is that it seems that what matters is apparently single core performance, not the number of cores you have.

The issue is more to do with the overall price of entry, a VR gaming PC + Rift is far too out of reach to go mainstream.

PlayStation VR and Gear VR are the only ones that have a chance at being a mainstream success, you can quote me on that.

Don't think of it as something you bolt onto your PC. Think of it as it's own platform. Not for nothing are vendors intending to supply the whole shebang.

This certainly seems to be how Occulus are approaching it.

Expensive + Confusing = Failure

Most people are put off by PC gaming because of compatibility issues. The mainstream won't fork out if they're unsure whether games they buy will work, it only takes a couple of frame drops in VR to make you sick.

That's why PSVR will succeed where this fails, it's simple plug and play and because every PS4 is the same customers can rest assured that every game will run well.

Nobody is buying a PC for this. People who already have one merely have to upgrade if they want.

PSVR is currently a moot point because you cant buy it.

I'm glad that the £500 Oculus Rift for £1000 computers is here. It means in five years I'll be playing Half-Life 3 on a £199 VR kit and a £499 PC. :toot:

I would say that the GearVR has more of a chance than the PSVR does to making VR mainstream.

If you want the best VR experience you will have to go for the PC compatible versions.

PC is the biggest gaming market. If VR is going to take off anywhere then it's going to be on PC.

As much as I'd love to say Sony will win the VR sales war as I'm pretty sure I'm getting it I have to agree the PC versions will most likely sell more in the next 4 years.
