if you have spare souls (consumables or just some extra) and you only need 1 more shard etc. to upgrade then yes buy it to hit the next +4 or whatever, but its not normally necessary to buy upgrade materials if youre playing through, exploring as normal etc.
the game is quite good at handing you the right stuff at the right times if youre playing it for the first time; its when you start skipping parts and speedrunning that you need to buy stuff to set up your character right.
if you dont like the Zweihander then dont use it! use what you have fun playing with. as long as its got D+ scaling in either Str or Dex or both then youll be fine when you upgrade it/level those particular stats.

you can use them at blacksmiths to make special weapons; unfortunately most of the weapons arent that versatile/useful.
hold off till you get a blacksmith option for that particular soul, and see if you want to make the weapon. if you dont then you can consume the soul.
the final boss soul can also be used for a particular covenant but if youre not a Faith character then you wont need it for that.

Didn't they nerf most of the boss soul weapons in an update because they were far too overpowered to begin with?

Should I definitely be able to go through Darkroot Gardens now? Going down the stairs near the fire and their is s ghost that takes off half to three quarters of my health with of hit and I take off at most a tenth of his health with a heavy attack.

You mean through the crest door right? You can trick those guys into killing themselves if they haven't patched it out.

Yeah through there. I've tried going to Darkroot Basin instead, I've used the watchtower basement key and the guy in there almost kills me in a single hit, I can kill the stone guys near the leak easily enough but can't seem to damage the boss. At a bit of a loss as to where to go as everywhere open to me feels like a massive difficulty spike since Blight Town.

Hydra isn't really a boss and it's not that hard either provided you can block it's physical attacks and you don't kill yourself by stepping over an easily missed ledge. Once you are close enough that it stops spitting water it starts attacking you with it's heads just block the attacks and get a couple of hits in. You'll start removing the heads eventually and it retreats just out of reach so you need to finish it off with arrows or bolts. You also need the Rusted Iron Ring from the return visit to the Asylum so you can move at full speed in water.

Havel (the guy in the watchtower) isn't too bad either. He's pretty easily defeated with backstabs, it helps if you can block some of his attacks. He has an attack which leaves him wide open for you to slip behind him and get a backstab in.

Scratch that, the guy at the bottom of the tower does kill me in one hit. I try rolling when he starts to attack but the animation just spins and kills me.

I did the corridor trick to beat Havel. It's a bit cheesy, but it works.

I managed to parry successfully once, and thought it was just a massive ballache with little reward. Big shield + counter = win.

This, only one of these games I could ever parry in was Bloodborne and even then it was only certain enemies.

I parried like twice . I spammed Havel with purple mist stuff as he won't leave the doorway/stairs at the base of the tower, in the hydra area. It's part of the game, the devs admit this.

Interesting how much I post in this thread and still haven't finished the game, probably because my gaming PC is semi OOO.

I'm getting a decent souls vibe from Zelda, so I guess I have little incentive to play it for that reason too.

Dark Wood Grain Ring.
Only enough armour to protect against midge bites.
Ninja flip all day.

Can't kill what you can't catch.

Beat Hydra and that banana split Havel :D

I spent a bit of time practising backstabs before fighting Havel and he seemed so slow and cumbersome compared to the other day.

I upgraded my Zweihander to raw mistakenly thinking this was the normal upgrade path. Is it worth losing the giant shard to go back to a normal upgrade path?

If I remember right I beat Havel by sprinting in circles around him until I could get back stabs in.

I'd say so. At +13 normal it has the same base stats as a maxed out Raw Zweihander but better scaling stats. If you have any decent number of points in strength the difference will be much bigger, too.

Raw is good for weapons with high scaling if you have low stats so can't make use of it, or if you need a boost in the middle of the upgrade path. But at the end normal usually overtakes it.

yeah raw is mostly a junk upgrade, unfortunately
it can be somewhat useful for faith/magic builds who use buffs, instead of using magic/enchanted/divine/occult weapons
