I managed to quickly get my strength up to 24 and I've reinforced the Zweihander to +4. It's a cool weapon but I'm kind of wishing I'd upgraded the winged spear. Do you have any tips for armour?

Thanks for the help guys. I've left this game for over 12 months because I'd just reached Blight Town and was scared off by its reputation. It really wasn't that bad.

Sen's Fortress on the other hand :dread:

Elite Knight set is good you find it near the Hydra in Darkroot Basin if memory serves.

If you find yourself dodging more then you want medium armour at least for that roll. Depending on stats you can go a bit heavier. If you find yourself relying almost entirely on the shield then there's no reason not to go big poise for big bois and wear the heaviest stuff you can find.

And since you're already rocking the Zwei there's only one real option for armour set:

GIANTS
GIANTS
GIANTS
BECOME UNSTOPPABLE

But yeah, Elite Knight is a great all round armour. Prioritise keeping your roll comfortable or your poise high. Like weapons it depends on how you find yourself playing.

I'm now even more confused.

Had a quick look at a guide which says I should go to Darkroot Garden after Blight Town and t feels like I've gone from being massively overpowered to underpowered. The tree guys are dead in one hit but the big knights are complete banana splits. Also Moonlight Butterfly was so easy that I'm guessing it wasn't a real boss?

There's no real 'correct' path through Dark Souls 1 because it's so open ended. You have the path I assume you took of Undead Burg to Depths to Blighttown to Deb's which is the hard progression route.

But in that I would say you could go past the graveyard really early because the catacombs and the boss are balanced for around the end of the Burg, start of the depths. However, there's an area after that which is completely locked off until a story point so most people ignore it until after that which trivialised the entire area.

Likewise with Darkroot. I'll always go there around the gargoyles just because it's opened and doable. And I'm pretty sure it's balanced for around there, too. But as it's mostly optional, and the only part you NEED to do comes later, like the catacombs, a few people leave it until later and clear it out in one go.

Blighttown is just a good time to do clean up on things because it comes after a couple of areas where it's awkward to get out of and back in and suddenly you're back into your open world with all the strength boosts that affords.

STR/DEX halberd/BKS supremacy. Black leather armour. Guard and poke everything, charge and roll through multiple enemies.

I know there are other places I can go but surely Sen's Fortress is the 'correct' place to go after Blight Town?

Is there any reason not to upgrade more than one weapon, armour set, etc?

Yeah, Sen's fortress is the story progression route.

And as for upgrades it's mostly just to do with resource scarcity. If you can use multiple weapons and have the titanite to upgrade them then go nuts. In fact, some enemies may we resistant to slashing or piercing attacks so getting a side club can help. Or a weapon with elemental abilities if you're struggling against certain enemies, for example. Sometimes it's even as simple as "this sword has a vertical slice and I need that for this particular fight because the enemy hovers around above me."

I'd just pick a couple weapons you like, probably from different weapon types, to see how you feel about each one. Eventually you'll settle into one weapon and you can build off of that.

Armour, I'd wait until you find a set you're going to be running for a significant time before you upgrade them. At least with weapons you know that if you like greatswords then your current weapon will last until at least the next greatsword, of which there's only like 5 in the game, so you'll get good milage. With armour there's no real gameplay difference outside of weight and poise so they can be mixed and matched more readily.

But like I said, if you have the titanite lying around then pump up your main weapon, pump up a secondary if you want, then if you still have enough kicking around pump up your armour. Later on you can buy unlimited upgrades up to +14 and can farm (albeit at a 0.21% chance per drop iirc) unlimited +15 materials. So once you start getting to buying things then there's no reason not to have everything as high as you can get.

Thanks a lot Met. Just been reading about weapon upgrades and I'm overwhelmed with the options available. It's making me think I should start upgrading dexterity to increase the speed of the Zwei.

As far as I'm aware Dex only increases spell casting speed and not weapon swing speed. And even then it's only marginally.

You're probably better off first of all getting your stats high enough to wield your weapons of choice and then sticking with two or three stats from there on in. I went mostly with Str, End and Vit. Besides Demon's Souls where I played as a glass cannon Royal I have always played tank characters in these games who have loads of health and stamina and can block almost anything.

Hime dont let it overwhelm you - the game isnt that 'hard' and you cant really strawberry float up completely as long as you think sensibly over your options:

most weapons are fine and will carry you through the game as long as you keep upgrading them (discount obviously dumb stuff like Mail Breaker and Broken Straight Sword ;) ), so its more 'important' to pick a weapon (or weapon type, e.g. greatswords) that you enjoy using
for stats, once youve decided on your weapon type, check the scaling: S is best, then descending through A-E to a blank. if you notice your weapon has mostly Strength scaling, then level your strength, ditto if its a Dexterity scale, both if it scales with both - e.g. C C
dexterity doesnt improve weapon swing speed; thats entirely hard-coded to the weapon itself. if the zweihander feels too slow, switch to a different weapon
armour isnt that important to upgrade; just keep sets with resistances around - like the Pyro set for poison areas. the order for upgrading is:
weapon (always) -> shields -> armour. basically if you have spare materials that you can use to upgrade a weapon, then they go on the weapon.

Forgot about endurance. Having a good stamina pool is important for bosses and enemy rushes

I basically leveled Endurance first, so I could carry more stuff (once I got Havel's Ring it was generally fine) and then alternated Health so I could take hits and Strength to first be able to use the BKS and then to just increase my damage.

Generally only increased those three across the game and found it fairly "easy" going.

Anyway, I finished DS a few weeks ago and once I've got through Deus Ex I might try another Soulsborne game.

I have Demon's Souls on PS Plus and would just need to reactivate my membership (there's an offer for 87p at the moment) or I can play Shadow of the First Sin, which I have downloaded on my PS4.

I did start Demon's Souls just before Bloodborne but ultimately put it aside when that was released. Beat the first boss and was doing 4-1 and 1-2 I think.

Which should I do next?

Dark Souls 1 -> Dark Souls 3 is the winner's progression. You can go back to 2 if you still crave more Soulsborne afterwards.

Dark 2 is still a great game so I'd go with that next and then Dark 3.

You guys keep saying spare materials; is it never a good idea to buy them? I'm not sure I'm ever going to be be any good with Zweihander, I like combos.

Also, can any of the special souls be used for anything other than getting souls at your leisure?
