The more you upgrade your strength/dex the faster you can use the BKS. Plus the speed won't matter so much as the damage scales with those stats.

I should upgrade both Strength and Dex or just pick one?

I got my strength up to be able to wield the zweihander but don't particularly like how slow that is either so was thinking going Dex for a faster one.

It depends on what weapon you want to use. By the sounds of it you like faster weapons so I'd focus on Dex. If you've already got the strength to use the Zweihander then you'll have the strength to comfortably use anything faster. For the dex weapons you've already gotten I'd prefer the Scimitar or Falchion as they have wider swings and vertical attacks rather than pierce, so they're easier to deal with crowds. However, if you don't mind killing an NPC that has probably exhausted all use to you then I can point you in the direction of a great katana.

What are the drawbacks to killing an NPC though? As t-pose guy talks about sinning and helping me with those. Presume killing an NPC counts as a sin?

Sin in Dark Souls is pretty complicated, but the level that Oswald the Pardoner works on is "I punched this guy and he won't be my friend anymore." and "This PvP guy invaded me and was mean, go get someone to beat him up."

Generally speaking attacking an NPC will only turn them hostile and stop them from helping with bosses or selling you things, and talking to Oswald will let you patch things up for a sizeable soul donation. So, if you think you've drained every last drop of use from someone, it's a viable strategy to off them. There is one exception that has massively far reaching consequences akin to what you may be thinking of, but you kind of have to be trying to strawberry float up at that point.

I only mention this guy because he's really safe: only has a few useful items for sale, drops a good weapon and isn't tied into any other questlines. Otherwise just indiscriminately killing can lock you out of cool gooseberry fool later.

Managed to get to Sif, which I'm pretty sure can be left until later. Still, at level 47 or whatever, I came within a few attacks of killing him. He seems relatively easy, and it's only the fact that every one of his hit requires estus healing that cost me, as I ran out of flasks. It was basically like a Bloodborne fight, with plenty of frantic dodging and I didn't touch my shield once. Wonder if could have actually blocked his swipes. I was basically expending all my stamina just rolling about all over the place.

There are two big forest areas near him - one filled with mushrooms and one filled with Hunter-type enemies.

I got the enchanted ember in the former, found the forest covenant and what is presumable the other side of that magic door, and a set of Eastern armour. Is that all that's in this part of the forest? Seemed quite confusing and don't know if I've missed something.

I'll head back to Andre now and see what I can do. Might finally be on to Blightown after that, though tempted to see how far I can now get in the Valley of the Drakes.

Don't bother fighting the drakes if you go there, unless you have excellent lightning defence. If you have the master key there's another route to blight town there. Roll past the trolls and if you sit on the ladder they will just run off. Cheating is part of this game.

I can't remember much else about the forest areas. Those strawberry floating mushrooms.

You've probably played out most of what you can do. If you're OP'ed you don't want later areas to be too easy.

Balls, just lost 20k souls falling down the strawberry floating Valley of the Drakes lift, after being killed down there.

Make sure you find the large mushroom NPC who gives you a half decent sword for your current level.

And don't mistake it for an enemy, sneak up on it, do a whacking great Zweihander double heavy hit, kill it and be all smug that you didn't take damage, then realised it was an NPC.

Mushroom NPC?
I've played through this like 5 or 6 times now and the only mushroom NPC I knew was Elizabeth in the DLC.

I thought Dual was trying to con me into walking up to one and getting punched straight into next Christmas.

I killed the two big ones guarding the ember, and the proceeded to murder all the little children waddling about. Haven't seen any more of the adult ones yet.

Just going to farm 20k souls to open the door so I can get back there from that hidden bonfire fairly easily. Then I'll finally go and do Blightown. Valley of the Drakes is still too tough (not the Drakes themselves jet the lightening damage), Catacombs are annoying and I haven't yet used the curse item to attack the ghosts in the Ruins. It's a lot more open than Bloodborne. Seems to be way more scope for returning veterans to mess around with the game's "intended" order.

Urgh Blightown affronts my eyes. It's not as difficult as some say, taking it slowly and exploring each small area thoroughly gets your through the confusing layout and helps find the many hidden items. It also stops enemies creeping up behind you. In fact, a lot of them seem to fall to their deaths or can be killed climbing/ascending ladders. The slow troll things are easily parried, though a pain due to the narrow confines. The poison dart guys aren't annoying if you keep your shield up to ascertain their location, then use a bow. The general path through the level is fine too, what with it being a simple descent.

It's the bloody framerate. Together with all the janky brown structures, it's headache-inducing. I don't know why it's so much worse here, but it can be like a flick book at times.

Still, got to the bottom and lit the two bonfires in the general area. The Great Hollow entrance is very sneaky. Feels a bit like an optional area too, so might explore that before venturing in the other direction in the swamp.

You're playing on PC with dsfix right?

Why aren't you playing on PC with dsfix?

I'm ashamed to admit I can't parry in this game.

Oh and it is an optional area.

Worst thing about Blighttown was trying to hit those mosquitos if you were using a long weapon.

Haven't had that problem with my BKS. It has a pretty wide sweep.

I don't have a PC over here - have delayed the buying of a new one until I get back to the UK permanently - so it was PS3 or nothing. It's been fine up until now, but it is horrendous at times in Blightown. It's weird how it just suddenly clears up at certain areas too.

I forgot about that, pissed me right off. I had to depend on throwing those little knives half the time to aggro them and then swipe at them.
