Yeah I guessed that the t-pose guy in the bell tower might be who they were referring to when the Firelink man said someone could heal me. And I've seen a merchant selling the purging soul, albeit for 2000 souls. Was going to backtrack to the tower next time I played.

Got BK halberd but yet to have the sword drop.

It's much more open and interconnected than Bloodborne. Bloodborne wasn't exactly linear and always presented you with a few paths, but here it's much easier to wander off and find an area way beyond your level.

Yeah, 3000 for Oswald of Carim in the belltower to get a curse purge stone is your best bet. If you have the time I'd stock up: the basilisks suck mad balls.

You can get 2 stones if you go back to the Asylum using the giant crow then leave a cracked eye orb in the smaller crow's nest just to the left of where it drops you, but getting there is awkward.

Getting there was ridiculous, I felt like this couldn't possibly be expected of the player. But it is.

I only got cursed twice I think, as it can happen in another optional area.

The catacombs is also optional btw.

2k souls is nothing later on.

So managed to make my way through the Depths. Was a classic Souls are - an initially confusing labyrinth of tunnels and areas seemingly impossible to map out in your head and full of hostile enemies. Yet you gradually slaughtered your way through, open up shortcuts and get a handle on the layout and where you need to go. Managed to get invade by someone called Kirk - is this the same as that guy in Bloodborne who invades you three times in set places?

Got up to the boss and it seemed ridiculously easy, what with being a slow, hulking monster you can get behind. But then it somehow caught me in its legs and trampled me in one hit. I'll be more cautious next time.

I have a feeling, what with going through sewers with a tonne of poisonous enemies, the infamous Blightown I have heard so much about might be through that locked door near the vendor...

Don't remember that in Bloodborne, but Kirk, in his full set of thorn armour, does show up in the DaS3 cathedral which you might be thinking of. And yeah, he invades you a bunch in this game, enough to drop his gear.

Shhh...it's fine. Don't worry. It's ok.

Good luck.

I would say Blighttown and Anor Londo were the best areas. So original in their layouts and not your typical video game style.

Reading parkseys posts makes me want to play this again.

Can't remember the guy's name in Bloodborne but he was either towards the end of the game or in the DLC, and he was in a cell somewhere ringing a bell. He invaded you three times over the course of the next couple of areas. Think after you beat him the third time, the cell door opened and you could get his stuff.

I enjoyed Blighttown as soon as I worked out why I was getting toxic straight after going in there. Those blowdart dudes are hella annoying and hard to spot.

You want that raggy "armour" to get around toxic.

I went to blighttown the wrong way. :dread:

There's not really a wrong way. There's the easy way or the way you have to take because you didn't choose the key as your starting gift.

Managed to beat the Gaping Dragon relatively easily. Seeing as I got something for smashing the tail, I'm presuming that's a bit of a Souls tradition.

Instead of going to Blight Town straight away, I thought I'd go and see the blacksmith in Undead Burg and upgrade my stuff. Instead I wandered past the skeleton area in Firelink and wondered if I was strong enough to attempt the Catacombs. It was tough - the skeletons can quite easily strawberry float you up even if you're quite high leveled (I'm level 44). I managed to sprint to the first bonfire and get the respawn guy. Then it was about two hours of painfully slow progress and many deaths. I also inadvertently stumbled upon a hidden second bonfire and patches. And a second blacksmith. Got strawberry floated by the wheel skeletons outside though, and couldn't find one of the respawn guys and got frustrated. Still reckon I'm a little low leveled for it (the wheels kill me in one hit if I have my shield down).

Might go back and try the Butterfly boss before Blightown...

One more thing, as I'm currently only using a sword and shield, is it worth it getting a decent bow? Is it worth dabbling in magic or saving that stat for another character?

Catacombs are a very late game area. At some point you physically won't even be able to progress for story reasons. You could potentially fight one boss for a helpful item but I wouldn't bother if you haven't even been to Blighttown yet.

Definitely get a bow and a load of arrows. Shooting far-off enemies to get them to walk to you is a helpful way of splitting up crowds. I wouldn't bother putting any points into magic stats if you want to go sword and shield.

Oh yeah, I know who you're talking about now. Yeah...that guy.

Had that mace/club/thing that sacrificed health for damage boosts. He was a cool guy.

Not actually sure if it's brought back, now you mention it, but yes, that's a thing in this game. Quite often if a boss has a tail you can cut it off and get a weapon. The Bellfry Gargoyles have it, that dragon on the bridge has it, the gaping dragon has it and I can think of 3 more off the top of my head.

Parksey wrote:One more thing, as I'm currently only using a sword and shield, is it worth it getting a decent bow? Is it worth dabbling in magic or saving that stat for another character?

I'd get a bow at least. Maybe not as a means of primary offence but it really helps if you can't be strawberry floated fighting a huge group all at once. It also runs off your Dexterity which will be useful for other melee weapons if you feel like switching it up slightly without going for a whole new playstyle, such as a katana as opposed to a straight sword. Magic, on the other hand, takes a fair amount of input to be worthwhile. Unless you find a weapon you REALLY love that scales with intelligence or you're planning on running magic as a big part of your build then it's not worth it. Same with miracles, but replace with faith.

Pyromancy, however, doesn't really run off of any stats, and the flame it uses weighs nothing. So if you have a spare attunement slot for spells and a spare equipment slot for the pyro flame then it might be worth looking into equipping a fireball or something to open your options.

But it's by no means required.

Now my END is pretty high, I plan on levelling up DEX a bit more. I leveled up strength in order to wield the Zwei but it's so slow that it isn't for me. I get punished to easily for whiffs with slow weapons, or I always try and get an extra hit in and get pounded.

I'll have to look in to pyromancy, as I don't really go for magic and stuff like that, as I'm sort of playing it like Bloodborne and not using ranged weapons.

Might use a bow for the butterfly though, as it's quite far away. Could do with using stuff protecting me from magic as when I went to fight it before (admittedly quite under leveled), it's magic attacks wiped 2/3s of my health bar out.

wooden shields seem useless, but they have high magic defense. there's a good one for the butterfly in the graveyard between Firelink and the Catacombs ;)

Managed to beat the Moonlight Butterfly easily as was surprised when it basically lead to a dead end.

Conversely, I beat the Hydra in the Darkroot Basin and was surprised when the forest seemed so much bigger than it first appeared. I saw a big boss door but was carrying a tonne of souls so didn't want to risk it. Beat the three massive rolling cats and skirted around the area to that covenant cat. Got attacked by two PVP-style enemies when I ventured forward, but managed to best them and make it back with 20k souls. I'll press on in the forest tomorrow. Still haven't actually opened the Blightown door.

Managed to finally get a black knight sword too. It's now more powerful than my Drake Sword, but not a fan of how slow it feels. Much prefer the fast weapons, but it's my most powerful one at the moment so I'll give it a go.

What's the best fast weapon to upgrade? Got the rapier, the falchion, the estoc and the scimitar at the moment.

Pro tip, just use the light attack with the black Knight sword. It's plenty quick enough and when upgrade will wreck everything. The heavy attack with it is too slow.
