My parents never laid so much as a finger on me and I've turned out fine. As Jaxley said on the first page, if the parents are getting to the point where voilence is the only way they can control their child, they've done something wrong somewhere down the line.

I was on the wrong end of physical and mental abuse from my dad up until I left home. I'd have to say the constant bullying and mental abuse messed my head up the most.

All punishments are capable of strawberry floating a kid up for life if used incorrectly.

I was very rarely smacked but if I did something wrong my dad would sure make me know about it. He scared the **** out of me.
And I think I've turned out alright. :D

Yes I do slap my dog, only in the event that she does something wrong and then she knows she has done something wrong. I believe that is why we have such a well trained and obedient dog.

My parents never saw it as the only way, just the best way. And it was. Anyone who thinks this is going to result in major trauma to the kid or whatever (if we are just talking spanking and not serious physical abuse) is giving the kids way to much credit. They're dumb animals, they're not made of china, they'll get the strawberry float over it unless they're some kind of moody emo idiot.

I'm sorry to quote a post from ages ago but I'm going to have to refute this claim. Its not against the law to smack children and it never has been. What they got through Parliament was a law to make it illegal if you leave a mark but smacking itself is not illegal.

Mild smacking is allowed under a "reasonable chastisement" defence against common assault.

My dad used to hit me when I was younger. I didn't learn anything from it, he just a gooseberry fool parent. I didn't learn anything about right and wrong from him, he was a hypocrite. I didn't really have a conscience until I was late into my teens. Somethings I knew were right and wrong, others I really didn't even think about. There was a point where my parents thought I was a lost cause, but mum took over when dad stopped hitting me, I loved to read, and mum never hit me. I learnt about right and wrong from books, movies, and my mum explaining things to me.

I won't hit my child. But I'll make sure he/she gets an education, reads a lot of books and has social interactions with good kids, and I'll do all of that to the best extent I can. Which is what my mum did.

I was spanked as a child actually. Never particularly hard, but enough to stop me being a dick when I was younger. Contrary to the impression some of you chaps may have, I've always been a good boy. It certainly stopped me from turning out like the little banana splits that run riot these days. :fp:

I was smacked as a kid, turned out well rounded, hold no resentment and will do the same to my children.

If there was a big button and you were told not to press it, how many of you would press it? Especially if you were a child. Even if it is explained you'll still do it. Now your told not to press it or you will get a smack. Less likely to do it.

Kids will not do bad things initially due to getting smacked. They will then understand as they grow up the reasons behind it.

As you've already told us Shadow, your father isn't the greatest of men anyway so that may be why you see it a little differently.

And that is the issue. Everyone here who has some over the top aversion to smacking no doubt had a parent who was overly aggressive, and did not smack in such a way that was beneficial (or in Tragic's/Silva's case, hit to the point of punching). Everyone here who thanks their parents for smacking them had parents that did so carefully, and correctly.

I was punched once. When I was 17. Don't act like you know me. You don't.

Didn't your old man, like, hit you 6-7 months back?
Remember you made a thread and you and your brother were arguing in the thread rather than in the next room.

I also find it amusing to think that you'd not hit a child to discipline them, but you're quite happy to go on a murderous knife rampage if some fella tries to dance with your old lady. In a nice way.

Yeah so I was spanked/slapped when I did bad things too. At the risk of sounding cliched "It didn't do me any harm".

Anyway I won't be enforcing the same rules on my children. It just seems almost hypocritical to teach values about respect via violence. Let's say your child punched another child. Would you then slap them and tell them hitting is wrong?

That's not to say I look down on people who do spank. It obviously works in some cases, judging by a lot of people here (and myself of course) but really spanking isn't the be all and end all. As long as it (or whatever punishment/reward based system you go on) is backed up by decent parenting then the child will turn out fine.

Forgive me for assuming that your father was heavy handed with you as a child. The fact that in this thread you said you were smacked, the fact that you made a thread on GR when your father punched you, and the instances where you mentioned you fathers drinking problems together with your general aversion to smacking led me in that direction.

I also think MCN could probably back us up on the don't hit an older kid thing.

I was wondering how long it would take for that to come up...

It should be noted that I assaulted my father not because he spanked me as a child (which he did), but because he was a thieving, freeloading fuckwit when I grew older.
