PostSpelling/grammatical errors which annoy you the most
by Hero of Canton » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:51 pm

'Were' has no 'h'. It's ridiculous how often I see this one.

The other one is the grocer's apostrophe - i.e. 'banana's 20p'. I nearly burned down a shop* once for advertising 'tape's'.

*With a vicious, glowering stare.

Well done. I thought it'd be a few posts before anyone got that.

I've honestly thought about starting a 'League Of Pedantry', with proper headed paper and everything, sending letters out to such offending parties explaining their mistakes and why they are contributing to the decline of literacy standards in this country.

On the blackboard at work with the menu listed on it for people to order from, the Mains section was titled "Main's".

One of the customers pointed it out and I changed it. Whoever put that up is silly.

Bought / brought bring me out in a rage. I don't even understand how people get them confused!

That's the one I was going to complain about. strawberry floating idiots, it's simple to understand when to use brought or bought. Yet I hear people say the wrong one all the time - usually "I brought it for x amount from shop x" when they should have used bought.

I don't claim to have perfect grammar/spelling/pronunciation but that one really pisses me off. Although incorrect use of an apostrophe doesn't bother me too much, perhaps that is due to it only being something that you read but don't listen to.

Its/it's.
There/they're/their.
Your/you're.

IT'S NOT THAT strawberry floating DIFFICULT TO LEARN THE MASSIVELY SIMPLE RULES.

But yeah, plurals using apostrophes are hilariously retarded. I also like the people who leave out all punctuation. There's one guy on here who posts crazy-long sentences that are just one continuous stream of consciousness without a break. "Yeah but no but no but yeah."

have / of

You should have / should've done something, not should of done something.

Joyce would be proud, I'm sure.

The increasing use of the verb 'gotten' around these here parts annoys the gooseberry fool out of me. There's nothing particularly wrong with the word, as it was used frequently in the UK in t'olden days until it was dropped in favour of using 'got' (which was made very clear to me at school) or more accurate verbs; but it's recent proliferation on this island is most commonly an affectation gained from watching too much U.S. Television, and that's just strawberry floating cretinous.

Also, the phrase 'in terms of'. It's usually the least imaginative substitute for a better form of syntax structure, and it's strawberry floating EVERYWHERE.
