I love Splatoon as a game but the gear system kind of ruins it for me. I never feel like I'm on a level playing field with people who have optimised clothes and it frustrates me too much. I know it sounds silly but it eats away at me as I play and makes it literally unplayable for me.

Oh yeah, hopefully you're paired with similar abilities so you should have similar gear, but often that doesn't happen. Saying that, I don't really have any idea about optimising gear.
I do want to know how some people can set off about a million bombs/curling stones when I can only do 1 before running out of ink

Primary ability on clothing is worth around three times the amount of each secondary ability slot (10 points of improvement to 3). . There are also diminishing returns at play where it’s not really worth having more than 20-30 points of the same ability.

If you pick three items of gear that each have a main ability you want (which isn’t hard to do, clothing is easy to come by) you’re half way there, and if you’re not interesting in grinding to improve, just take whatever upgrades you get from the rolls. They’ll all help. I’ve hit S+ in each ranked mode doing this as I couldn’t be bothered to grind for chunks.

Honestly, due to the dimishing marginal returns, optimising each spot doesn’t make a huge difference, certainly not enough to really disadvantage you unless you’re playing ranked at the top level.

Regarding the bombs, those are types of specials. So they’ve filled their special bar first. You can’t optimise your gear to allow you to do that with just subs.

Spot-on, Tomous! I learnt that lesson during the Splatfest; several times I jumped into a danger area and I just got instantly splatted as I arrived.

Can you only do the map-jump to other players on your team? Perhaps it was me but, when I was choosing somewhere to jump to, sometimes it accepted it and other times it didn't.

You can only super jump to teammates, the spawn or beacons placed by players with that sub.

Thanks for the explanation, but it's not the practical effects of the gear moment-to-moment, it's knowing that I could have some numerical/statistical advantage (even a tiny one) if I put hours and hours into grinding. It's too much for my brain, it makes me stress about optimising these parameters and then I lack the time & in-game resources to do so and then I get upset. EDIT: Obviously to an extent this is something wrong with me, I'm not necessarily blaming the game for it.

I've only played the game a little bit, Karl, but I kinda just enjoy the action without worrying too much about the gear that other players have. I got pasted by guys using sniper rifles and "bombs that followed me"... I just tried to avoid 'em  . I guess I may feel different if I continue playing and get duffed up week in, week out!

Your advice was appreciated, not because I was super jumping into danger, but because I didn't know about super-jumping.

I don't think that salt won, more team Peado, as Team Peado nearly always win.

Marina is better than Pearl, but salted popcorn is far better than sweet.

Not sure I'll be around in time for Splatoon tomorrow (well, later today), but I'll try to make it for 9 as these games have been pretty good. Hope everyone else has fun either way!

Just loading Splatoon 2 up now, got back earlier than I was expecting. I'll join whomever is playing through Friends.
