Love seeing my favourite actors in games, especially now we're approaching photo-realism.

This cannot be the forum's first Star Citizen thread.

It was probably previously buried in the Kickstarter thread. No way to play it, nothing to see really before now, so no need for a dedicated thread.

Elite Dangeous has a thread, for example.

This is actually turning into a proper game then? Last I heard it was a $60 million scam, all promises and no reality (except for massively overpriced DLC ships).

I don't think scam is quite appropriate. I think CIG has every intention to deliver, the question is whether or not it can.

Starlancer got pretty damn close, though.

But the game as of now is shockingly sparse right? After they took $60 million from punters?

I think there's a ship viewer and a star map. So there is no game as yet.

I was working on a "What is Star Citizen" article a couple of months back but gave up because it made my brain hurt. Might try again soon

I'll just add that this is a crowdfunded game I don't have a stake in. While I've enjoyed space games before, and I've enjoyed many of Chris Roberts previous games in the field, it's heavy reliance on selling digital ships for real money just turns me right off.

Yeah, I was in love with Freelancer back in the day but I have no interest in this because of the convoluted dev period and dodgy as strawberry float funding model. Roberts keeps showing all this amazing stuff (the planet landing demo really did blow my mind when I first saw it) but has delivered none of them.

Considering some of the horror stories that have started to emerge recently about this things development and the frankly bizarre rant the developers published in response to a negative piece on The Escapist I'd be stunned if this turns out to be even halfway decent.

Yeah I read that piece, the conclusions of which were basically that Roberts wife, who I think is the marketing director, was a petty dictator firing people if they so much as looked at her the wrong way. Their response was a PR disaster as well, a supposedly professional company playing tit-for-tat.

I thought that was all a load of rubbish by the Escapist? I mean I saw that a load of their "sources" were dodgy Australian internet sites, and their genuine sources from real employees, had fake employee cards. Was there more after that?

It looks fairly impressive. I don't know if I have time for a game this big though. Also I'm still sort of expecting it to blow up.

I thought that Gamescom demo looked absolutely amazing.

The game is free this weekend if you want to have a go at the current Alpha.

Have they got a release date? I'm actually trying to clear a bit of a backlog.

I tried the Alpha earlier and it's pretty rough. The controls and movement are all over the place, while the game itself doesn't run well. It's all very early, just.
