The money keeps rolling in. Nine years since the crowd funding campaign started, the game has received over $400M with $8M arriving in October. The spin-off single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is seven years past the original target launch date.

I don't know much about the game but... I'm just amazed at how so much money has seemingly resulted in so little output. It feels like it's now impossible that the game could meet expectations; although, after such a long time, perhaps we don't even know what to expect?

Edit: To be fair, I'm not sure that I'd realised that backers can actually play the game now; it's in Alpha. So... I guess they're at least getting something for their money.

I think the whole Star Citizen project (or 'scam' if you like) must go down as the most bizarre drawn-out episode in the history of PC gaming. I still struggle to get my head round the sums of money some people have poured into this for next to no result. I don't suspect it will ever move beyond playable rough alphas, and those alphas will just be tiny snapshots of what was promised.

Wish people would stop perpetuating RSI’s “largest crowdfunding ever!” narrative. Almost all of that money is sales, and this is just a slimy, disingenuous way to grab some free headlines and dupe any potential future money into thinking the project has had heavy investment.

I'm not too familiar with the project, jiggles - on the surface, the $400M sounded like a lot of money to me; is there another angle to this that you're hinting at?

The game is in Alpha and you can buy stuff for it. I'm not sure it's great value though.

This is a good example of a sunk cost fallacy.

It’s simply that it’s sales, not funding. They’re riding on the message that they have been “funded for $400M raised from backers” because that makes it seem like it’s the most successful crowdfunding project of all time, and the biggest budget game of all time, and neither of those are true. It’s earning all the free headlines and coverage of having those titles, but it’s a lie.

Your revenue is not your budget.

Ah! I see what you mean, jiggles! Is it a game that you'll be trying or have the ongoing years of development put you right off?

Well, I did try it already on page 1 (5 and a half years ago?!), but I’ll try again if it ever comes out of alpha. But that’s a big if.

I watched a few gameplay vids and what's there looks to be pretty impressive; the ships are smart and the detail is good. You can tell that it's had some serious work put into building it but, at the same time, you kinda wonder what the end goal is as it's so crazily ambitious.

Isn't all of the money being pumped in to development though?

I think a lot of the dough is going into development, Lex, although the company is also opening a huge new building in Manchester and plans to substantially increase staffing; from the current 400 to something like 1,200+.

Squadron 42 looking good.
Feature complete and in the polish stage apparently.
Still no release date but it's looking closer than it has in a very long time.

The good news is that by the time Star Citizen comes out, we'll have the nuclear fusion necessary to power the PCs that can run it.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

It seems incredible that production started in 2011... it actually feels a lot longer than that  . Funding passed $500m over a year ago  .

I worked on the packaging for a range of star citizen branded peripherals that were supposed to come out so long ago that the company doesn't even exist any more.
