Yeah, that trailer was pretty much the main thing to get me back to playing.

So far the Romulan game seems pretty good, but unfortunately it makes exactly the same mistake that Blizzard made with WoW, and just like WoW has completely missed the point of having a third faction. Once you complete the intro quest chain you just get told "Now pick if you want to be allies with the Federation or the Klingons".

What's the point of a third faction if it's just going to lump you in with one of the existing factions? All you're doing is just introducing a new race that can be on either team.
Though at least, unlike WoW and the Pandaren, the Romulan characters still get their own distinct storyline which has so far been pretty good. The quests are a lot more story-focused than they used to be when the game launched and I think it was a good move.

I've been dipping in and out. It's not hugely changed overall to be honest. The Legacy of Romulus pack does give a good bit of new starter content, but disappointingly at the end you're just given the choice of "Join Starfleet or the Klingons" rather than the Romulan's becoming a major faction in their own right.
The game is also quite a bit more micro-transaction focused now, though I suppose that's what you'd expect in a F2P game.

The fleet system is where you get a lot of decent gear etc, however the GR fleet had been dead for over a year so I jumped ship and found a better one. hit me up ingame @trelliz if you like, can't remember who I had on my friends list before.

Man this is a bump. I noticed that they had a new update that is opening up the delta quadrant and raising the arbitrary level cap. I think I will have a mess about and see what is what.

Oh and I have been away from the game so long that when I logged on in to earth space dock I had no clue where the strawberry float I was as they have changed the look of it completely. It looks a damned sight better now.

I've been quietly going along in it for ages, I dropped some cash in it a while ago - seeing as I've been playing for so long and not paid a penny - and with a few characters as farming mules you can be quite self-sufficient, playing the exchange rates for the pay-to-win-abloo-bloo-muh-game-balance currency.

I got the new intelligence escort and cruiser with what i'd been saving up, they're an interesting departure from conventional ship design:

This is the one free to play game I ever paid money for too. There's no way I was flying a Galaxy class ship without the right bridge. :shifty:

If I can get this for free on PS4 then I'll definitely give it a go.

An interesting development, although I guess it being on both platforms rules out any cross-platform connectivity, which would certainly help in terms of population. There are also a number of graphical improvements which will come to the PC version:

we invested heavily in our engine and added several modern lighting technologies that significantly improved the visual quality of the game. Deferred lighting, light probes, and improvements to our High Dynamic Range lighting system combine to provide more realistic lighting that feels like a true refresh to the game. These technologies, and the skilled artists that bring them to bear, create an experience that is not only more immersive, but simply put, more beautiful. To the community that has been with us for over half a decade, I want you to know that these lighting improvements will be coming to the PC version of the game later this year as well.

I was wondering what they were going to do as the engine is definitely starting to show its age, so some polish is a welcome addition. The next big expansion is TOS/temporal cold war-themed, so lots of original series ships, characters etc. Just keep a close guard on your wallet, you can play most of the game free but there are a LOT of tempting shinies...

Apparently this is coming out on ps4 and xbone next wednesday, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original series; no crossplatform play and nothing from the pc version carries over, so anyone wanting to make the jump has to start completely from scratch.

I'll probably give it a go to see how different it is but won't stick around for long, got too much in the pc version to leave it all behind.

No cross play seems pretty naff. Putting everyone on the same servers would have been way better.
I might try it out just to see how it handles with a controller though.

Spent a few hours on it tonight and completed the first set of Starfleet missions before it takes you back at the Earth Starbase.

It's weird having played this a few times over the course of it's lifetime. I played the beta. Then went back to it when it went free-to-play and again now. It still plays the same way, and they've managed to condense it down onto a pad simply enough (So far anyway). I think it's definitely better on the PC, and there's definitely a few small bugs and quirks here, but it's a fairly simple to get into the game and from what I remember you can solo quite a big chunk of it. Worth checking out at least.

So yeah I'm gonna keep it installed and stick with it for a bit.
