Some new info

Cryptic Studios has confirmed that Captain Kirk will not appear in its forthcoming MMO title, Star Trek Online.

When asked by MTV Multiplayer if we could expect to see Kirk in Star Trek Online, the game's executive producer, Craig Zinkievich, responded:

"You probably will not. I think you’ll see events and settings, and relatives of the known characters. But we’re in the future where the majority of the known characters have passed on."

Zinkievich also explained more about the game's story, revealing that it will be set 30 years after the last film, Star Trek: Nemesis.

"We picked that for a couple of reasons. We think deep-down that people want to play in that universe," he said.

"People want to be a part of that universe, but they don’t want to replay stories they already know. They may be a part of it, but they want to change the story and they want to participate in the story, it’s not just, "Okay, I’m going to go play that episode.""

"Setting it in the future allowed us to provide that new and yet familiar experience to people. And at the same time, at the end of “Nemesis” everyone was kind of happy, peace was there but peace never stays long in any place. Even in the Star Trek universe. The Khitomer Accords has broken down, the Klingons are at the Federation’s throat, and they’re on the verge of all-out war. The universe is a much more dangerous place with a lot more conflict 30 years in the future."

An official release date for the title is yet to be confirmed, although a 2010 launch is expected.

Looks great! Shame it's an MMO though.

The backgrounds look mint, they're what Legacy should have looked like.

No-one will have the Enterprise. Well, no player character anyway. Each player will captain their own ships.

Plenty of ships in Star Trek are more powerful than the Enterprise which is why so many of them blew up/ crash landed or were just shot to pieces in the films.

Isn't the USS Excelsior a more powerful ship than Enterprise?

It was more powerful than the Enterprise or the Enterprise A. The Enterprise B was Excelsior class though, and a modified design at that, and as STO is set after the TNG movies, it certainly wouldn't be more powerful than the Enterprise of the time. ;)

That said, new Enterprises were always built as Starfleet flagships. The original Enterprise was supposed to be decomissioned when the Excelsior was being trialed, and it was fully comissioned just in time for the Enterprise A's last mission in TUC.

I'd also pick the Defiant in a one on one dogfight as it was built as a war ship rather than a ship of exploration. Sure the Enterprise was powerful but it was certainly not armed to the teeth so as not to scare the crap out of people in first contact situations.

That was the other one I couldn't think of. Warf was Captain, wasn't he, in First Contact?

Worf commanded the ship in First Contact, but Sisko was its captain.

Even the Defiant was blown to bits at one point, only to replaced with another Defiant class ship they renamed in its honour.

I really should watch DS9 again.

Yep :) . It can deal some serious damage when it needs to has better armour than the Enterprise and I think has the better crew for battle situations when under the Command of Sisko.

Wait. Whoa! Confusion.....wasn't Sisko the captain of Deep Space Nine??

But I suppose it doesn't help that I never really got into DS9 so I'm probably way off!!!

You are right Gandalf but they most likely didn't want any of the DS9 characters in the film. Worf took over Command of the defiant when Sisko had better things to do.

The Defiant was posted to DS9 under Sisko's command, originally for purposes of Gamma Quadrant exploration (as it has a cheeky cloaking device and is armed to the tits.).
