Hopefully EA being pressured by Disney to do something about the P2W gooseberry fool will force them to adopt a different, better progression system.

Ouch! :( This had best result in a complete change to progression/crates/etc. I'm level 17 now and it's just a solid grind to get anything, very unrewarding.

I wouldnt read into this too much as a victory for the consumer. Pretty much every single sequel released this year has had massive drop in physical sales but thats jsut because digital is finally taking off on Consoles. Id be more interested in seeing concurrent player numbers than physical sales

Having played this for a few days now, I can confirm that even at level 17, the grind is monolithic and depressing (77k xp to level up). Heroes vs Villains is the best way to level up fast, but it still takes several matches to get anywhere. Apparently, by level 27, it's up to 177k to level up. strawberry float.

DICE best sort this gooseberry fool out; tailor the progression system to not make the player bleed money to level up.

EDIT: Also does anyone have any tips for multiplayer? I just seem to get killed almost straight away, and barely know of any objective. Best classes, star cards, guns to use?

Class is up to you. I try to get time in with them all, but I seem to do best as an Officer or Heavy. Assault is a fair all-rounder though. I've had some fun as the specialist, too, sniping can be great fun, but I'm bad at it. The Infiltration ability is very good though.

Star cards... Improved thermal detonator for assault, bounty hunter for any class, assault training for any, improved battle command & improved blaster turret for the officer, stealth for the specialist.

Weapons... The A280CFE for the specialist is a beast, the Blurrg-1120 for the officer is great (do upgrade it though), the resistance heavy's default blaster is superb, and for assault, I think any gun should see you right.

Heroes vs Villains is the best way to level up quickly. Class "levels" are actually a count of how many of each one's star cards you've bought/upgraded.

Thanks. What do the levels actually give you? All the unlocks seem to be behind the currency.

EDIT: I now see that to be able to craft higher level star cards you need to be at a higher level.

Yep, I'm trying to get up to level 20. Not sure what level you need to be to craft top tier Star Cards, but I know 20 is the threshold for the blue tier threes. So many crafting parts needed, hope I can get the last couple of Heroes unlocked so I can start work on loot boxes. Hope DICE adds crafting parts to match rewards, too. Also to Arcade - the rewards there are way too stingy.

Edit: What's up with not being able to use the default blasters in any era like you can the unlockable ones? Weird thing to era lock when you've got Darth Maul and Kylo Ren fighting the Rebellion.

Got this on Friday, played split screen co-op with my girlfriend. Bit annoying that you have to start on easy but it was good fun - got through all the light side missions and started on the dark side. Was busy the rest of the weekend but went back yesterday and played through the campaign - short but good fun and scratched that star wars campaign itch (I played through on hard, would recommend). Some nice surprises in levels and playable characters too!

I then tried out the online. It's... not great, is it. A horrendous unlock system that I don't even understand and leads to me being killed by people with straight up far better abilities/weapons. I'm not even sure what to spend my credits on and if I unlock things by playing more or by using credits on lootboxes.

Also, what is with the game modes and why isn't there a standard conquest? They must be adding that, right?

I also wouldn't read into it having anything to do with lootgate. You're average consumer is just buying the new Star Wars and they might have been burnt on the last one being painfully average.

I doubt the average consumer remembers anything about the last one, TBH.

Getting more into the online now as I'm getting better (and sticking to heavy). When it all comes together this turns into a thing of star wars dreams. We had this one battle (us defending) that ended with pretty much everyone fighting down this single corridor. Lasers were flying everywhere, sparks were erupting from every surface, explosions were left right and centre, and droids and clones were constantly running in to fill the gaps. We chewed through their last 40 reinforcements in about a minute flat. It was properly star wars.

Also, starship battles :toot: The best part of the online.

I think my biggest complaint with the multiplayer is the way it rewards and further boosts the best players. Some games (like Mario Kart) rubber band and help out those doing worse to close up the pack. This does the opposite. A good player will get enough points to become a hero, and then suddenly they're even better - and they get into this positive feedback loop. I'm struggling to even get enough points to play as a hero, and it certainly doesn't help when I keep coming up against them.

Oh yeah, turrets have way too much health too.

I mean, it's a pretty standard structure. Call of Duty's Killstreaks and CS:GO's money system are the exact same thing. Good play earns you points to spend on better stuff.

OR, the quickest way to get enough points to spawn as a hero is to focus 100% on the objective until you get enough points for an X-Wing or TIE Fighter, then continually spawn in the air from that point forward. It's rare that you'll be shot down with not enough points to buy back as a spacecraft again, and air-to-air combat is a lot easier to pick up kill streaks in than when you're on the ground.

Progression system is broken but the gameplay is brilliant. Starfighter Assault is fantastic.

As mentioned on Giant Bomb this week, its important to remember that Disney must have been in deep with this in the first place, making sure characters and levels maintain integrity of IP etc and is probably why there are no cosmetics in the lootboxes - them getting involved is now about brand and share price protection in the run up to a new film and damage control rather than stepping in out of benevolence to any of us.

You can't grind for hours to unlock a better AWP - CS's core game is the opposite of this: no external operant conditioning mechanisms of 'progression' outside of each match. If someone dies as vader in bf2 you can't pick up his lightsaber and helmet and carry on or give it to someone else on your team.

I know seeing "points", "hero" and "better" in the same sentence is enough to trigger your gag reflex, but OR is talking about the basic system of players who are doing better in a single match getting to pick the higher-level stuff when they spawn in.

The balance they use is that hero characters get much lower points for doing anything, so someone can't spunk all their points on Darth Vader then steamroll through the other team to keep respawning as him.

I get what you're saying jiggles, but consider that if you are more powerful from buying crystals then you will be able to earn enough per game points to play as a hero character faster.

It comes back to the jealousy aspect Trelliz talked about earlier. i.e. "I'm sick of being owned by Darth Vader, but it takes ages to get to the part where I can play as Vader. If I had more powerful regular unlocks, then I'd be able to play as Vader sooner."

Pretty much played 10 hrs of the trial and the game has grown on me (other than the bs loot boxes) and tbh I've not unlocked that much but seem to generally do pretty well in most games , I may purchase when it's gone down in price.

Although Boba fett is very OP

Yeah, I have the same complaint about killstreaks (I always thought they were completely backwards, deathstreaks make a lot more sense). It has felt even more pronounced here though, I think because of quite how powerful heroes are. It can be very satisfying to kill one, and I appreciate that they can help break a stalemate - but on the flipside, if I'm defending a point and then we lose it because a hero steamrolls through it feels cheap.

Sounds like a solid tactic. Actually though I would rather not play as a hero - I find being a regular soldier much more fun. I wish that there was a 40 player mode without heroes for that reason. I always used to have them turned off in battlefront II.

It is so, so easy to die as a hero if you haven't already mastered him/her/it in Heroes Vs Villains or Arcade Mode, though, and even when you have mastered them, death still comes easily if you're not absolutely in the zone. So even while it's frustrating as strawberry float to have your lines broken by one, it does take some skill to perform such a feat. Gotta give props where they're due.

It helps when they've got super high level Star Cards, but even then they're far from invulnerable.

I'm not buying this, partly because of the freemium progression mechanics in a full priced game and partly because I read in a review that the game spans all the Star Wars films and Star Wars films have been a bit pants since 1980. You know it's true.

BTW I don't class the Disney films as proper Star Wars films, they're too good. They are Star Wars themed films. If it hasn't been ruined by George Lucas it ain't Star Wars.
