This latest update at least gives those of us who still care Starfighter Assault in Arcade mode. That's all I've been waiting for, all this time. Only six maps, but it's okay. At last, I can just play mindless dogfights against pretty decent AI. No sensible offline career progression (FFS, EA) because - you know - there HAS to be a punitive penalty for wanting to NOT play online ( :fp: ), but...*sigh*. Well, it is what it is and EA is moribund when it comes to their attitude around these things.

Frankly, I'm still smarting that the Deathstar DLC from the last game is forever buried behind a 'play online only' wall, along with most of the other DLC content. Way to waste all that time and investment, EA. Good job!

Myself and a lot of others called this outcome before the game was even released, when it came apparent in the "beta" just how bad the play to win element was.

EA already made a big thing about no season pass, after removing the microtransactions too there wasn't enough money to be made to make it worthwhile producing additional content. The only stuff they've really added so far is withheld characters and bits from the launch :fp: I expect they'll release BF2015 stuff over the year and possibly some new characters and things they've maybe been working on in the lead up to launch.

Maybe they'll get it right on the third attempt :simper:

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall SWBF2 being the most expensive game they've ever made - or at least one of them.

Season Passes & microtransactions garner heavy negative reactions from gamers, who want nothing to do with them, but EA sees no future for Battlefront without one or both of these elements in play.

Seems like a no-win situation leaving no future for Battlefront unless gamers give in, or EA moves to a new business model.

SWBF 2 sure is a pretty looking game and it's impressive how well it all holds together during a frantic battle.

Oh EA, what have you done. You're all set to be voted the most hated company once again. :fp:

The 2v2 HvV sure is hard to win. I got two kills over a dozen rounds last night.

Why is it only playable in Jabba's Palace? Oh right, it's EA.

If a business can't make a profit using their model then they obviously need to reassess it. It's the same with movies, they cost so much to make that sometimes they can sell really well and still only just break even. That's on them to sort out, it's their business and they control the budgets.

This is a Star Wars game for god sake  if you can't release a well made product on the back of the name and not be able to turn a profit then maybe these people need to think if the job is actually for them.

Although I think the two main problems aren't so much the profit this game made, but actually:

a) EA spent way too much to secure the Star Wars licence over competitors
b) Shareholder dividends

Season passes and micro-transactions when priced and contented correctly can be good. Its just that in this case its woefully mismanaged and incompetently delivered.

I'm reviving this thread for anyone who might be interested in new additions.
After Grievous released in October, a larger event is coming this month with Geonosis and Obi-Wan. That's at the end of the month, with weekend events giving slight twists on modes throughout. Fixes have been made, and continue to be made. And hints continue to be made that conquest is actually going to be a thing for that new mode in February.

I haven't played this in a while. There's only so many times I can play the same few maps over and over before it gets boring, and adding a solitary new hero, villain and map aren't going to get me into it again.

Call me when they add 6+ heroes and villains and at least a dozen new maps.

That'll probably be in a year, then, as all this content will be adding up to be making a more complete experience.
Until they throw it all away for the inevitable third game, anyway.

I think he was 35,000 in-game credits. I only ever took a quick look before jumping into arcade to use him for free.

I think ive got about 200k credits saved. The real problem will be getting a game as the new heroes to level them up and get the skills.

How to ensure I won't play your content in an online shooter: release it over a month after the game is released

Conquest would be awesome but why wasn't it in the game to begin with?

Grievous is certainly an exciting edition, I'm just not yet feeling the urge to really sink 50 more hours in. Come February and hopefully, with a couple more heroes, maps and at least one new mode, I'd be more than willing to jump back in.

I don't expect them to get anywhere near fulfilling my DLC wish list, not with this game. Star Wars has grown significantly in terms of potential maps, heroes etc since the Pandemic Battlefronts and it would take a significantly larger team than they have working on BF2 now to add the quality and quantity of content I want to see.

Oh, definitely. There's two whole TV series to be drawing from, as well as a new trilogy of films and the singular films.
In Pandemic's two games, nearly every single planet featured in the six films made it into the games. Then Rebellion added the rest to the PSP games.
I'd love to see a whole host of content from The Clone Wars, for example. And if a certain rumour is true, we might be getting some.

You're mad if you're waiting for six new heroes and a dozen maps.

Whether you like or not, the fact they diluted the microtransactions means it's not going to be anywhere near as well supported as it might have been. They removed paid DLC and made everything free in the hope that they'd be able to get the cash elsewhere. They aren't going to be desperate to support a game that makes them no money.

They should have had loot boxes like Overwatch. Made a tonne of skins and cosmetics - the SW universe is ripe for this - and you could have included stuff like Smash Bros-style trophies or lore dumps or stuff like that panorama they did last time. Instead they tied micro transactions in with their progression system, cynically slowing it right down. This got them loads of negative publicity so they stopped all of them. This meant they got no launch revenue from them, when interest in the game is at its highest.

They then turned them back on, but who was going to start buying them then?

So the game is a dead duck. It's not DICE's fault and maoning about them not including this or that is misguided. They've probably been told not to dedicate resources and time for a game that isn't bringing anything in.

A shame really, as I like the game and it would have been great if they fleshed it out a little more.

I'm not really, but I've poured at least a hundred hours into BF2 and I'm just done with it. My point is that without a significant dump of new content, which I know won't happen for all the reasons you listed, I'm done with the game. I love it to bits, it has tons of potential and that's why I have my big ass content wish list, but all of the potential has been squandered - first by the loot boxes, then the progression system, lastly by an EA that was unwilling to expend more resources than the barest of minimums on a game that was flagging heavily in sales.

My only hope for the series' future is that lessons are actually learned from this entire debacle (and I think that DICE has actually learned - EA, not so much), and that BF3, when or if it happens (it'll probably be a next gen game, as the original BF3 release slot has since been assumed by Respawn's SW game), incorporates those lessons from launch and does not suffer from the kind of dev team shrinkage that slowed BF2's DLC down so much.
