The restoring them later part is new, and pretty much renders the whole thing pointless. It's a short term attempt to try and negate some of the PR and get people to buy the game so initial sales don't suffer too much, before patching them back in again later with no real changes having been made.

It's a good start. But it's clearly just a start and they'll do their usual minimum adjustment and hope everyone's forgotten by the time they turn it back on.

So you’re still buying a game (for now m at least) with contentocked behind a huge grind - you just can’t buy past it now.

And haven’t people had 2-3 days to buy? Potentially giving them massive advantage?

Its a good band aid, but it presents own problems...

Things DICE/EA need to do now:

  • Ease up on the grind, either by raising XP and/or credit rewards, or by lowering purchase and upgrade costs.
  • Make sure that players who don't want to buy Crystals upon their return can earn enough of them to compete by completing the in-game challenges (I've noticed that several challenges had small quantities as a reward as of yesterday), or make them the primary (uncapped) reward for Arcade mode, replacing credits.
  • Give us more heroes and villains: Anakin & Ahsoka, Obi-Wan & Cmdr. Cody, Cpt. Rex & Cmdr. Wolffe, Jyn & Krennic etc.
  • Put Darth Vader on the Republic's side in the pre-Imperial maps. Having him fighting clones and helping droids just doesn't make any kind of sense.
  • Give us more reinforcements: Destroyer Droids, Clone Commandos, etc.
  • Fix bugs.

I’m amazed at EA’s turnaround on this. I guess it is a good thing but, man, talk about striking up negative publicity. I think they had originally decided to carry on regardless but obviously things had reached a point where all the bad feedback had created a perception problem.

It's not really a proper turnaround. They're worried about initial sales so they've announced they're turning them off, but will turn them back on later when they have the user base in place.

Yeah, they're not removing lootboxes or getting rid of the paid currency altogether - which is what really "hearing loud and clear" would mean. They're doing this until the media attention goes away, their share prices stabilise and various gambling commissions stop looking at them so then they can go back to milking the whales and dolphins like nothing happened.

Turning microtransactions off for a short time isn't going to solve the problem. It's the very existence and proliferation of these lootboxes and microtransactions tied to progression in full price games that people are growing sick of.

Whatever they say they can't remove them from the game. The game was built on them and the entire project was costed based on their existance  if they removed them then that money will have to be collected some other way.

That Jim Sterling video  he tore it to shreds and didn't even need to touch on the micro transactions that much

That was my thought.

I guess they might come up with some system later that makes everything wonderful, but I doubt it.

Well, it depends on what 'progression' means. I think the sheer amount of time to get hero characters was insane, if that's brought down a lot and card stuff is not purchasable then it changes a lot.

Yeah, I think you’re right, guys. Initially I had thought that EA may (finally) have been listening but it would seem that they’re playing a clever, and yet odious, move. “We’ve listened and we’re putting things right!”. After the launch week sales... “And now everything has been put back as it was!”.

Seems that Disney basically stepped in and told them to sort this shit-show out.

Reading the Eurogamer article on this, and according to them Venturebeat were saying that Disney boss Bob Iger spoke to EA's Andrew Wilson shortly before they announced the change.

I imagine that was a nice, pleasant call.

That people are thinking the offering today is an improvement at all over the offering yesterday only proves that most people didn't even know what they were angry about.

I think the issue is that people aren't aware of the details. They're seeing the headline "EA Removes Microtransactions from Battlefront II" and that's it, leading them to assume they're gone permanently which is exactly what EA will have been hoping for.

It'll be the reputational damage to the brand that they're worried about I would think. News stories about gambling commissions and consumer anger aren't what they signed up for when they gave EA the licence. Especially with Last Jedi only four weeks away they really don't want anything to take any of the shine off that.

And you may find yourself buying lootboxes in a £40 game.
And you may ask yourself, "Where does that money go to?"
And you may ask yourself, "Am I right? Am I wrong?"
And you may tell yourself, "My God! What have I done?"
