The details of the call between Bob Iger and Andrew Wilson have supposedly been leaked,
Credit to /u/kravguy for this information (semi-confirmed EA insider). Here is a rundown of what's currently going on in Hell, aka EA's headquarters: Microtransactions are going to be reintroduced, that is a GIVEN. Right now, there are two options on the table:

1.) Micro-transactions will be cosmetic ONLY. This is the less popular option, and really the only way this option will be implemented is if community outcry is both loud enough and sustained. If they CAN get away with it, they'll try like hell to.

2.) Microtransactions will be used to purchase specific star card and cosmetic packages/bundles. This is so that technically the gambling aspect is removed from multiplayer (as a side note, available for purchase will be "boost" packages, i.e. boosts in XP/credits.

This is coming no matter what, this was determined way before BFII's launch or the controversy). Worth mentioning is the fact that EA/Disney did not change because their "morals" compelled them to. It was pure community backlash (Reddit, news articles, etc.). NOTHING is set in stone YET. This is a PR stunt, they will see whether or not the controversy dies down, and if it does, option #2 is coming, and this time, it will take heaven, hell, and New Jersey to make them change the new system.

So, KEEP ON FIGHTING. I'm talking Youtube videos, posts on forums and Reddit, Twitter hashtags, PSA's on Facebook, the whole 9 yards. Disney only made EA give their statement because it was right before Christmas AND right before The Last Jedi release. Bad Star Wars press of any kind=less ticket sales=pissed off Mouse House. As soon as TLJ and the Christmas season are under way, expect EA to reintroduce micro-transaction that will, once again, greatly affect multiplayer negatively UNLESS we continue to demand the game we were promised!

Keep up the fight! The future of Battlefront II LITERALLY depends on it!

:o . Blimey.... the publicity must be dreadfully bad if even Disney has (temporarily) delayed an income stream.

Amazingly, I believe that EA’s Need for Speed Payback has an even more intrusive gambling / payment / progression system in place but the Star Wars brand has overshadowed that story. It feels good to not be buying either game... I guess that looks like I’m trying to clamber onto some form of moral high-ground but, lets face it, that height isn’t exactly mountainous when we’re”re talking about EA.

Reading the Eurogamer article on this, and according to them Venturebeat were saying that Disney boss Bob Iger spoke to EA's Andrew Wilson shortly before they announced the change.

I imagine that was a nice, pleasant call.

The microtransactions are easily startled, but they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers...

I think the issue is that people aren't aware of the details. They're seeing the headline "EA Removes Microtransactions from Battlefront II" and that's it, leading them to assume they're gone permanently which is exactly what EA will have been hoping for.

I'm not talking about them coming back later. I'm saying yesterday's game with the microtransactions removed isn't better than it was. If anything, it's a little worse.

It's just another case of brainless word-allergy. "Microtransaction = bad, so no microtransaction = good".

Do you think the game is worse now that the card system has been temporarily removed, jiggles?

Edit: I posted before seeing your latest post.... so I guess, yeah, you do think it’s worse. Maybe that is because game progression was heavily bent towards in-game loot box / card purchases?

The game was seemingly designed to push people towards microtransactions. With these now removed all you've got is a multiplayer game with a non-functioning (or at best, glacially slow) reward system.

The card system is still there, the only change is that you can't pay money for card packs.

So you’re still buying a game (for now at least) with content locked behind a huge grind - you just can’t buy past it now. Just have to work those hours for Luke and hope RNG grates (for ingame currency) are good.

And haven’t some people had 2-3 days to buy? Potentially giving them massive advantage?

Its a good band aid to remove the worst elements, but leaves massive problems and presents own problems..

Our posts are crossing with each other :) .

I guess that game progression was heavily bent towards in-game loot box / card purchases and now the only option is to grind for ages to get stuff. In my eyes, neither approach is particularly attractive.

Pretty much.

I highly doubt there's going to be any balancing changes done in the interim, certainly nothing major. They might reduce the grind ever so slightly but with the set goal of bringing back the Microtransactions they aren't going to want people to unlock everything before that can happen.
I suspect the Microtransactions will return a short time after Christmas so that Christmas/boxing day sales are done and dusted and the game is past any refund periods for digital storefronts.

Nope. Not buying it (literally or figuratively) until they say what's happening when the microtransactions do come back.

Microtransactions in a full-priced game = bad, so no microtransactions in a full-priced game = good.

So, what difference to you as a player if the guy who killed you has better gear because he paid for crates rather than grinding for hours for crates?

The game shows you what they killed you with, making the source ultimately irrelevant but the desired end behaviour of buying crates to have that gear too is the same - such systems are pyramid schemes of envy and jealousy with ea sat in the corner like the RE4 merchant with a lot of good things on sale to get you to the same place to stomp others.
