GAME OF THRONES CREATORS DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS TO WRITE AND PRODUCE A NEW SERIES OF STAR WARS FILMS

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Wonder if that dogshit-sounding Confederate show they were gonna do for HBO has been canned completely now for this. Hope so.

They are going a bit nuts with Star Wars films now. I think there are too many in the pipeline. They could do with slowing it down a bit rather than having a yearly release to avoid it becoming over saturated.

I know they need to make money on it, but this is putting the long term at risk. At this rate they might as well invite Lucas back to do something with it too.

Edit: Apparently Disney has multiple Star Wars TV shows in development... but all for its banana spliting streaming service. :x

I’ve discovered recently that it’s pretty easy to.. “acquire” the big shows from various streaming services if you know where to look (the megalinks board on reddit seems pretty good so far). Hopefully it’ll be the same situation with the decent Disney-stream exclusive stuff too.

It's awful with what they're doing to the franchise...

Now if you'd excuse me, I'm going to play Final Fantasy XV

As someone who watches a film most evenings, I don't consider it over-saturation to have a new Star Wars film once every 300-odd films. I mean, even if I was forced to watch it at gunpoint - which nobody is - I could probably stand it.

It's not so much the film itself, it's the endless hype/speculation/reaction/analysis of each one that will slowly bleed into the edges of the next one. It's hard to avoid now, it'll only get worse!

It’s quite easy to avoid the hype, you don’t have to read every story/news item about it.

I don’t think one film a year is oversaturating it, Marvel release more than that a year and there is still massive interest in those movies.

The danger with the Star Wars plans is less that it will oversaturate the market, but more that Disney will struggle to keep the quality up. The majority of Star Wars films are average to terrible in quality, I can’t imagine adding loads more is going to improve the situation.

I agree. One a year is fine got awhile if the quality is good, but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case so far.

It’s possible that they will get better, even though there are more of them. After all, Force Awakens, Last Jedi and Rogue One were all far better than the 3 prequels. The Han Solo one looks gooseberry fool, but it might turn out to be ok,

I think they need to copy the Marvel formula slightly and have an overall person in charge of the direction of the movies. Having different writers/directors is great, but they need to be working towards a fixed story point, rather than just chucking each others work out as soon as they take over.

Personally the last 3 films have been some of my favourites, and if they remain that way I'm down for more. Though if they're releasing multiple a year they're going to need to start to become more varied I think.

Regarding Solo, Disney aren’t exactly making a big push for it marketing wise. It’s almost like they’ve written it off already.

I don’t understand why they haven’t copied the Marvel formula when it’s worked so well.

I'd much rather see Benioff and Weiss take on a series, rather than another set of movies.

Frankly I'm getting a little bit burnt out on all things Star Wars right now. Battlefront II was a clusterfuck of epic proportions, Last Jedi was hugely disappointing and Solo is doing absolutely nothing for me.

Say what we will about Lucas, but at least he had an overall vision for the series and it was just his shite execution that let it down. Right now it just seems to be floundering about without much direction. Naturally I hope I'm wrong. I hope Solo is every bit as good as Rogue One and that the movies still to come can impress me more than TLJ did, but right now I'm not really too bothered.

May as well be a ubisoft franchise at this point.

Alternative intros to Force Awakens that were ditched along the way:

Luke's hyperspace hand would have been amazing just to see the backlash. :slol:

Apparently the lightsabre hand made it as far as the shooting script. It was leaked a few months before principle photography if I remember correctly.

New Solo photos from EW. I have a bad feeling about this...

EDIT: I reeeeeeeally like that second possible opening though. That would have been a fantastic way to start.

On the second video I preferred the idea that the star destroyer crash landed on jakku after battle and wasn’t just dumped there so I’m glad that didn’t make the cut.

You'd have to come up with a decent logical reason for dumping it.

The actual intro is better for me as it felt very Star Wars but without being such an obvious call back.

My guess is that they'd have to turn Jakku into an official military dump for the New Republic, not unlike the USAF's Boneyard.

Why dump it and not just not destroy it? Or fly it into a sun? And if its to scrap all the parts then why risk dropping it from orbit when you could land it? Nah the old battle makes far more sense.
