I think the final third, which makes the film, would have nowhere near the impact if they didn't kill them off

Plus, they needed a film in which plot armor didn't save the protagonists for the umpteenth time.

Yeah I get that. Part of me likes the ending and thinks it was a good move by them but another part of me would like to see another film of the same tone with some of the characters set in the original trilogy.

A Rogue Squadron or X-Wing VS TIE Fighter type movie could fit the bill, if done right. Largely unconnected to any known characters, with a few references here and there, it could show the rougher side of the Rebellion, similar to R1, but different too.

Or they could transplant the Firefly concept into Star Wars' universe.

Why would they have wanted to do that? There were no interesting original characters in that film.
