I think having a Star Wars movie every year, and saturate the franchise name, is a bad idea by Disney.
Star Wars is already the most overly saturated brand in the world, an annual film isn't going to have much impact on that.
I think the two things are certainly tied in. The exposure in the shops, with Star Wars on so many products, is tiring, and it muddies the waters in terms of being able to identify which film is coming out and when (to the general, stupid public.)
A group of my friends have started a small competition to see who can find the most ridiculous Star Wars branded item.
This was always a classic example:
I was trying to explain the sequencing to my wife (who cares not a jot, but was admirably feigning interest to humour me.)
"OK, so there are the three films I grew up with, 4, 5 and 6. They're great. Then there are the prequels - 1,2 and 3, which are pretty terrible. That's the one you saw, with the little boy and the pod race and Darth Maul. Ok, then they brought out 7 last Christmas, and you saw some of that but fell asleep. Anyway, now they are bringing out spin off films, so the one this Christmas, chronologically, is kinda 3.5, but has all different characters in..."
Don't get me wrong, it looks great and I'm very excited, but too many films and products leads to over saturation leads to boredom, boredom leads to ambivalence, ambivalence leads to hatred, and we all know where hatred leads.
