I don’t know what’s happened to me this year, but I did not like that at all. Sure they’re setting a new era but Finn aside everyone else are just not interesting, for a few minutes I thought Ren would be, but no he’s just a bit mental, Rey continues to have the depth of a puddle and Snoke jobbed out in the second movie. Urgh.

I loved Luke in this and his moments with R2 and Leia were moments to treasure but the rest was just a bit gooseberry fool and pointless.

Anyway so this year my three favourite things in the world Zelda, Mario and Star Wars all left me hugely disappointed :( what the strawberry float happened to me?!!

I loved Force Awakenings and Rogue One is my second favourite Star Wars movie behind Empire.

Really disappointed to be honest. Random grumbles in a semi-random order

Leia's dead but not dead now a Disney princess flying through space was bullshit.

The whole trip to the casino city for literally no reason other than saving orphans was dull.

Phasma's death was awful. Her entire character was awful ultimately.

Snoke's death was so anticlimactic. Was really hoping for a big reveal that he's somehow Darth Vader's testicle reborn or something.

The reveal that Rey's parents were no one special was almost like a slap in the face to people trying to guess.

The one bit that had me tense where Finn looked to be sacrificing himself to destroy the battering ram cannon...nope, he's fine, was all just a setup to be saved for a kiss from the girl.

Luke's hologram stuff at the end before just dying out of nowhere was just... bad. The moment he was Luke with a dark beard, it was clear he wasn't actually there. And the "death" scene was lazy. It was literally just a fade and he was gone.

The insistence on shoving so many cute animals down our throats got grating after a while. The porgs, the horse-dog thingies on the casino planet, the crystal wolves... it got too much eventually.

I loved it. Throne room scene was the highlight but the space battles were stunning too. Eddie strawberry floating Hitler.... My god , I've never smiled so much at a piece of casting. So happy for him as he is a legend and his timing was excellent.

Was the boss on the big evil ship at the begining the Irish guy from Paddington 2?

Luke vs lasers, just wonderful.

BB 8 was great as always but I do love the porg, the sad eyes bit and the splat against the window. Curse you Disney for making me buy another toy for my shelf.

Rey looked lovely and I like the fact that Kylo and her now actually have a relationship of sorts.

Smiled so much throughout the whole thing and got emotional too, mostly with the sense of pure joy and wonder of it all.

It did what force awakens didn't, it took risks, had consequences and moved things forward. Wish he was writing and directing the next one.

Wish my image sig would work

The first Star Wars film to feature the words 'ass', 'bastard', and - most notably- 'spunk'.

Even though it could have been cut shorter and it was a bit cheesy. It totally took risks, I though it was easily the best Star Wars of the new era. I felt like it had an actual philosophy behind it and was putting forward some interesting stuff. Also Benicio Del Toro character was amazing.

Random thoughts:

- I understand Del Toro's purpose in helping to fully develop Finn into rebel scum and I appreciated the MGS4 war economy flavour world building, but the casino planet subplot probably could have been condensed, particularly the chase scene which I properly switched off for the duration of.

- LOVED the middle finger to all the people fixated on speculating the identity of Snoke and Rey's parents (though I suppose the latter could easily be misdirection). I'll echo Skippy's post about the film severing it's ties to the past and I applaud it for that.

- I liked seeing the submerged X-Wing, both as just a general nod to Empire as well as a tease playing on people's concerns that the film would be a rehash of ESB. I actually expected Luke to show up in it at the end but I suppose that might have looked a bit ridiculous.

- Not as ridiculous as Leia surviving though. Wish they were ballsy enough to have her die like that. It feels like Jedi are going the Superman way of only being unable to do things they haven't tried yet.

- Kylo Ren and Rey fighting back to back was great. Felt like you could see some Japanese cinema influence in there.

- The more prominent comedy in these newer films can be jarring, it hits more than it misses but there's the odd instance where it takes me out of the film, particularly in this where the rebels are in peril almost constantly.

- Adam Driver and Mark Hamill are standouts performance-wise.

- Luke's psycho face in Ren's flashback interpretation of his training is hilarious.

- Power fantasy portion of my lizard brain wanted Luke to domino effect the AT-AT's with the force at the end.

- The Luke and R2 scene as well as Yoda's return were very well done.

- I've heard complaints about them not respecting Luke's character but I like that his role was essentially to pave the way for a new generation of heroes rather than being this force that literally turns the tide as everyone expects and hopes he'll do. Realistically, I know that none of these films are likely to ever top the original or Empire for me, no matter their actual quality, and these are big, dumb, fun space adventures aimed primarily at children after all, so I'm cool with them doubling down on the new cast to be identified with. They only have themselves to rely on in IX now (I don't think they'll have Luke return).

I enjoyed it, it was a good time. Spilling most of my drink and losing £20, however, was not. Wouldn't have happened if I didn't go to see it so gooseberry fool film 1/10.

Pretty much encapsulates my feelings on the film.

I'm really glad I watched it again straight away. Never ever done that before and it was interesting to still be processing it as I'm rewatching.

It just hit a lot of star wars beats whilst also being its own film and took real risks. The Snoke and Rey's parentage approach was extremely ballsy.

The only sour note was the Leia Mary Poppins bit and it was more a shame because the whole Ren not be able or wanting to pull the trigger and then it being done a random pilot was a great ploy. It was then negated by the Leia floaty gooseberry fool. That could have been done better.

How are they going to kill Leia off now? Will she be back as a CGI character?

After sleeping on it. I'm desperate to see it again.

I wish the admiral had more of a death scene as he is a legend and if had switched places with purple hair lady then it would have been an epic way to say goodbye to him.

Captain Phantasm's shiny armour now makes sense since it deflects blaster fire.

I watched a YouTube video from Worth a Buy (normally does game reviews) was basically a rant about how he hated the film, but he did make some interesting points on how much of the last Jedi was taken from Empire and rotj. In time I think this movie will be viewed the same way The Force Awakens was.

The kids in the film were very odd, felt like they were lifted right from the prequel trilogy. And was it me or when the kid reached for the broom at the end did it force pull towards his hand?

Practical effects were awsome, especially Yoda and porgs, but the riding on the big racing dogs stuff looked so very green screen.

Really really loved the Red Guards though, proving why they are employed and actually being a threat.

Hopefully see it again on Sunday.

Wish my image sig would work

I know it might be because I know she died shortly after filming; but did anyone else think Carrie Fisher seemed ill from the start. Her voice was very gravelly?

Was definitely some force shenanigans going on, probably to hint towards that the force will always be within some, all they need is hope...

I look forward to the drinking game where it's take a shot everytime someone mentions hope, because it was full of it

Something that really confuddled me (and I know Star Wars hasn't had the greatest relationship to science)

Snoke's ship wasn't at the first battle, so they can track people regardless of being present at hyper jump.
Only Snoke's ship had the special tracking feature turned on
Snoke didn't know about the special tracking feature.
Other ships could have the special tracking feature turned on, if they knew Snoke's tracking feature had been destroy. (Why they don't all have it on all the time?)
Snoke's ship wouldn't notice for a few minutes if the special tracking feature was turned off.
Given the first point why does it matter? They didn't have to present at jump last time to track them...

I think that Poe and Fin should have been left to die in TFA so that we were spared thier crap storyline in TLJ. I also thought Benicio del Toro was crap - hope hes not in the next film.

The Rey/ Kylo stuff was really good though.

One thing I really didn't like

It's set over about 2 days, and very soon after TFA (if not immediately after)

It felt like an episode of a TV show rather than part of an sweeping epic saga

Just seen it 6/10 for me. It felt like it was rushed for some reason(probably need to watch it again) and a bit too cheesy in places , but some scenes were pretty damn good.

I'm still mulling the film over, but I've written this about how it ruthlessly moves the series forward

The timing seemed to be all over the place. The ship had 6 Hours of fuel left but that was enough time to run around the casino planet, ride some dog horses, and for rey to get in a few training montages.

The Empire Strikes Back also had this problem. Luke's entire training by Yoda on Dagobah seems to only take the same amount of time as the Falcon chase. Don't know if relativity is a thing in the Star Wars universe.

I thought the TLJ was OK. Better, certainly, than the TFA but still with similar problems to that film. Thoughts:

-Some of the humour was a little too much/too gooseberry fool. Particularly the Poe/Hux encounter at the start.

-Still too much reliance on imagery/scenes from the OT e.g. A three person throne room sequence with loyalties being tested. A white planet with walkers attacking a rebel base. A hermited Jedi on a planet, which has a 'dark place' where an apprentice goes to learn something about themselves. And so on.

-Maybe the Resistance should be using missiles with FTL drives.

-Not enough Chewie.

-What was the whole deal with Justin Theroux's codebreaker? The whole thing felt totally pointless.

-Thought Benecio Del Toro was really good. Would actually like to see more of him in the future.

-Made some bolder story choices than I had anticipated. The killing of Snoke being the most obvious one.

-How does Kylo know about Rey's parentage? (if in fact he does)

-Wasn't it awfully convenient that a planet (with an old rebel base, no less) appeared, just when the remainder of Resistance had to abandon ship? I mean, maybe I missed it; was that their original destination? Actually, that was probably the thing that just didn't sit right with me at all. Took me right out the film. Felt similarly at the bit in TFA where, from Maz's planet, the Starkiller base can be seen destroying all the Resistance occupied planets across the galaxy, simultaneously. In broad daylight. Sheesh.

-Where was Finchy from The Office? Totally missed him.
