“Im holding for Hugs!” :dread:

The look that the Prog gave to Chewbacca while he’s about to eat one of its species. I cringed and laughed at that.

Never thought that would be possible.

And the scene where Leia floats back... Christ almighty.

Yoda scene was well done.

The only chills I have is when Holdo uses her cruiser as a battering ram and ripped through the First Order ships and Falcon’s “surprise!” attack on the First Order on that weird salt planet.

Surprised that Snoke bites it.

Phasma underused again.

Rose was alright.

Must admit when Dr. Ellie Sattler rammed through Snoke's ship, that was strawberry floating awesome.

Also, can we talk about how much more gorgeous Rey was this time around.

I dunno if she's filled out a bit more since TFA, or grown up more as an actor since TFA or if it was makeup trickery... But she looked lovelier than before.

That bit when Rey threw the lightsaber to Kylo and he turned it on for a split second through that guy's head. Loved it. I so would have been up for more of Rey and Kylo together.

I loved it when after all the pathos and build up to her meeting Luke. He just chucks the saber away.
Lots of cool touches like that.

When he brushes his lapel after the barrage!
8-)

Had tears pouring down my face when he meets Leia

And a lump in my throat every time Carrie Fisher was on screen.

Huh.

Somehow much less than the sum of its parts should be.

Some great scenes/moments but the entire thing is weighed down by flaws.

So Rey wouldn’t have a lightsaber in Episode IX?

Seeing that all knowledge in building one is destroyed? But then Luke did make his own...

The books she had on the Falcon at the end were the ones from the Jedi temple, weren't they?

I thought so

Plus she know she had an entire days training from Luke. She’s got this.

Could have done that with the other two ships though...

Luke's ghost could show her how to build one

(forgive the potentially incoherent ramblings that follow, still on a high from having seen it)

Loved it overall, it's a bit baggy but the characters+scenarios are so consistently engaging that I can overlook that somewhat. While I loved TFA's fast pace, that would've been difficult to maintain across all three films so I'm glad this one slowed down a bit.

Though structurally it's certainly odd, if it weren't for the lack of Luke I would've been fine w/Snoke's room + Phasma fight + resistence escaping being the climax, the film basically ends up having two third acts. Two great third acts so I didn't mind, but it does perhaps speak to just how stuffed to the gills this movie is; a few moments aren't perhaps given enough breathing room for them to impact (the light speed attack on the first order namely), plus it does have the Hobbit problem of major passages of time passing without major characters appearing.

One big takeway I did have was Snoke; I went from not caring about him in TFA to loving him in this, Andy Serkis really got to shine with more lively dialogue + being an actual presence on set. The Vader/Luke/Emperor stuff in Ep6 is some of my favourite SW matieral so I was so happy to see echos of it here, albeit with enough twists to not make it a repeat. Was rather shocked they killed him off, one of many cases of unpredictability in ep8. Is a shame we don't have him as a sustained villain throughout the trilogy, but Ren's proven himself to be fit for that by this point.

And man, they do go the darker ESB route and then some...pretty astonishing how low the heroes are in this, the desperation of the resistance + Luke being so broken and dejected is some of the darkest stuff I've seen in a major blockbuster recently. I didn't like Rogue One overall but the brief conflict within the rebellion was one of its few interesting ideas, glad to see it explored here with Poe and Laura Dern's character.

Not surprised that among the most contentious stuff seems to be floating Leia + strange casino planet sequence:

- While it was affecting to see Leia have Skywalker talents arise from within her, the execution was so silly and it does raise the question of why this hasn't happened when she's been in peril before. The lead up to it was great though, I like how they toyed with your expectations ("ah man Kylo's going to kill off his other parent - wait no he's not - wait someone else is - ah she's dead - wait no she's not -blimey this is goofy as hell")

- Finn and Rose are strong enough characters to carry this section...but yeah even for this series the sequence of events is really contrived, not helped by the rushed pacing. I also feel it echoed one of the prequel complaints in resembling real world styles + settings a bit too much, it's not as bad as the 60s diner in episode 2 but it's still a bit too close to our casinos; I feel SW is best in having elements of our society but being a bit more otherworldly with them.

Still, it had a nice payoff at the end with the film's theme of a legend's impact...though after ep1+2 I still get nervous at the sight of kids in these films, I always expect stunted dialogue + bad acting to follow D:

There's a lot more to unpack here obviously, ultimately though the characters being so likeable and the narrative so emotionally engaging wins me over enough in the end, as was the case with TFA.

---

How did you guys feel on the look of Yoda? Was jarring at first but I appreciated him resembling his ep5 incarnation in both movement and personality.

I was really disappointed by the film, just some general thoughts;

Snoke to be gone so soon, is such a waste of building him up in Force Awakens.
Luke's story arc, if that is him gone for good was poor and nothing new.
I thought the CGI or puppet for Yoda was a bit off.
Finn and Poe are one trick ponies, Finn's storyline felt shoehorned in just to give the character something to do and his 'romance story' was pathetic.
Nice to see Adrian Edmondson get some decent screentime and his eye roll when Snoke came on the videocall was great
Navin Chowdhry was one of the pilots who went to their doom at the end, love Teachers

There is so little people left on either side (good or bad) it should be called Star Skirmish.

I want to see what happens next but thinking about it I have very little to care about, What happened to Luke and Who are Rey's parents? Is all I can think of.

How are they are going to do another trilogy is beyond me, I don't even care much about the characters that are left!

Why do ships only have fuel for 2 jumps? And if that’s the case why jump to middle of nowhere with one of them
It all happened in about 24 hours
Poe got 100s killed in 2 separate events for no reason
Casino planet was stupid
Why did Holden stay on the ship (she said someone had to - but seemed no need, until she had to do something unexpected)
The entire resistance fits on the Millenium Falcon
First Order had to keep bringing up a new Ultimate Weapon to try and give sense of peril (Dreadnaught, Snokes ship, Snokes ship with magic tracker, Battering Canon)

Isn't the next trilogy unconnected?

The way I look at it is that at least the prequels didn't effect the original trilogy. But these films kind of gooseberry fool all over it as everything that happens in the originals is utterly meaningless. Defeating the empire was ultimately the worst possible outcome given what happened after.

Rey's parents are nobodies thankfully so unfortunately you have even less to care about
