Saw this last night -
6/10Things I liked:- Yoda - was lovely seeing him back in puppet form, far more tangible and cheeky
- Luke - Mark Hammil's a great actor, why isn't he in more stuff?
- Kylo Ren - a character of genuine conflict, plus dem big pants
- The new AT-ATs - they looked beefy as strawberry float
- Snoke - he was a genuinely menacing villain and his gold dressing gown was lovely
- Ade Edmondson - I did about 5 double-takes, couldn't believe he was in this
- Most of the time it looked and sounded great, but you'd expect that from these new SW films.
Things I disliked:- The use of Snoke - what a waste of a potentially great character. We didn't learn anything about him and his death was cheap.
- Snoke's Power Ranger guards (who were all too far away to actually be of use to him) -
strike a pose!- The lack of either Rey or Kylo turning - they chickened out, Rey should have turned, that would have been a brave move.
- Daisy Ridley - the delivery of some of her lines were super wooden, especially in the first act.
- Leia - sorry, but she looked and sounded like Jackie Stallone, they should have just let her die when the bridge got hit. Now they'll have to kill her off in a less-satisfying way in the next film. Dumb. The flying spacewitch bit was hilarious and not in a good way.
- General Hux - overacted and too snivelly, bit of a buffoon. How is he a general in a ruthless empire?
- The general silliness of it all - too many quips and slapstick bits. It was like the Avengers.
- The atrocious filler gooseberry fool with Finn (wasted character) and Rose (why does she exist?). Purely there to give Finn something to do, which contributed zilch to the story. I wish he'd died sacrificing himself.
- The Last Guardian racehorse/dog sub-plot.
- The "Chromedome" quip that Finn says
- The Codebreaker's stupid speech impediment - why is this a thing? Del Torro's a great actor, why waste him?
- The weird Rey mirror sequence, ultimately pointless and unnecessary, didn't tell us anything. That whole "dark well" thing on the island was a wasted opportunity, could have done a lot with it.
- It was too long, 30 mins could have been cut (hello Casino subplot) and it would have been a better film for it.
- The demise of Brienne of Stormtrooper - wasted in both films - what was the point of her again?
- Some dodgy greenscreen when Finn and Rose were in the hangar that was on fire, looked cheap as gooseberry fool.
- Poe Dameron - a genuinely reckless and dangerous guy, a proper liability. Quite unlikable.
- There's probably more that I'll think of later...
6/10? Might actually even be a 5.
Also, I noticed about 5 people walked out of the screening after maybe an hour, which surprised me as IMAX tickets aren't cheap.
