What do some people hate so much about RotJ?

Also, does anyone remember that loads of people said that RotS was better than Jedi when it was released (on here anyway)?

The first half of the film and the Ewoks.

The first half of the film isn't anywhere close to being as bad as the casino in TLJ. The ewoks aren't as bad as the porgs, dog horses, sea cow or crystal foxes. They also didn't do anything as cringe as the BB8 controlling the AT-ST.

The speeder bike and Endor stuff is excellent. Nothing like that in any of the other films in the series.

I loved RotS at the cinema, but time has not been kind to that film. Last time I watched it it was a wretched experience. Phantom Menace is the only one of the original trilogy that still stands up for me, and yes, I know Jar-Jar is in it.

“Ewoks aren’t as bad as the Porgs” :slol:

Wasn’t the issue with the Ewoks that they essentially walked all over the trained stormtroopers with just rocks and sticks? I don’t recall the Porgs actually fighting the First Order....

I was talking about them as characters, not their potency in battle.

Yeah but everyone knows the fighting in Star Wars is modelled after battles from WWII, so:

Stormtroopers = Wehrmacht
Ewoks = Zulus

It's always hard to re-evaluate a film you loved as a child, but even trying to critically look at ROTJ I still love it. The throne room scenes are probably the best thing to come out of any of the Star Wars films.

Yeah the cutting between Endor/Throne Room/Death Star fight is one of the best collections of scenes in history. Kind of funny that two of the best bits of TLJ are callbacks to two of those, that being the throne room bit and when the Falcon recreates its run through the Death Star on the salt planet (with the same music to boot). Except unlike ROTJ they are totally standalone moments, 90% of the latter scene's quality is by reference alone and the rest of the film never really reaches those heights (except maybe the suicide run into Snoke's ship).

I really love Brick and Looper, so the direction and pacing of TLJ is the last thing I expected to be disappointed by.

I really hope we see more of BB-9E in the next film. I mean, somehow, they took the adorable-as-fuck BB-8, and made a genuinely badass, villainous version for the First Order.

:wub:

I spent the majority of TLJ thinking the black BB unit on the Rebel cruiser (on the bridge) could be BB-9E, acting as a First Order spy with a secret tracking device in it, and that it'd be found out and dealt with by BB-8 in an epic-but-cute fight scene. Still hoping for that in IX. Or Rian Johnson's trilogy.

It really wasn't. I would have enjoyed it far more if it was BB8 controlling an AT-ST from a terminal.

I must be going mad as the only thing I remember with the Falcon on Crait was the reference to the trench run in ANH? Probably my favourite scene in TLJ.

Why, what difference does it make?

Because it wouldn't have looked like an animatic for a jar jar binks scene.

The Crait run was a reference to the asteroid field chase I thought...

Why, what difference does it make?

A droid controlling something from a computer seems more believable to me than sitting in a vehicle that until now we've only been known have a cockpit for things with arms and legs.

I can understand why that would be nitpicky though and I guess the real answer is that I didn't like how it was shot with the outside of the AT-ST breaking away to reveal BB8 in a seat of some kind of seat and if I remember right the scale was a bit weird when it was just him sitting on the legs. Again, that is a bit nitpicky and I didn't like it because it felt a bit transformers-y.

The scale was definitely off, looked like a giant BB or a mini atst.

Being that it was on crait and the amount of CG gooseberry fool creatures that were in this, I'm stunned a crait dragon didn't show up and start flying around for no reason.

What if the new AT-STs were designed for droid pilots? :shifty:

This wouldn't be unbelievable as we know that R2 can fly an X-Wing but the way it was shown with BB8 sitting on the legs just looked bad.

Now you've said it, I'm disappointed this wasn't how it happened :(

Hime wrote:The first half of the film isn't anywhere close to being as bad as the casino in TLJ.

What was wrong with the casino? I thought it was incredibly rushed, but the actual casino I thought was a good location. It was a Mos Eisely cantina for rich people
