The more I see of this game, the worse it looks. Amazing what a giant marketing spend can do I suppose.

You ever played it Sam?

Nope, just seen a lot of footage and reviews, as I was initially very interested. To be honest, I'm not really a fan of Bethesda RPGs anyway.

You're a fan enough to find youtube video's of it's bugs and 'failings' though.

It's really not that bad. I haven't gone back to for a while cos GP is kinda nuts at the mo but I fully intend to.

I have played it and I think it's as bad as that video states. It's a 15 year old game that came out this year.

Massive bug on the final mission, so I can't complete it. Previous non-buggy save is more than a week old. GOTY eh.

I did, as I said, was really interested, got caught up in the hype and was thinking about getting it, but the later reviews put me off and most of the content I've seen surrounding it, seems to back the more average reviews' criticisms.

Yeah I was massively underwhelmed by it tbh.

I'm thinking that it's the kind of game that I'd enjoy; I'd be very happy wandering around the planets/outposts and building a camp/base. I like the "Bethesda RPG" style of gameplay.

Not a guarantee. I loved Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3 + NV but this is mediocre at best. Turns out wandering around a connected world is apparently a huge part of the charm for me.

I genuinely think it's better than Fallout 3/4 imo.

That is very high praise indeed, Photek! Maybe one day I'll be exploring the Starfield.

Never played 4 so it could well be better than that, but it's not better than 3, or even Oblivion if I'm being honest. In my humble opinion of course (which is always right).

The world being broken up into lots of little parts is the main thing that has dampened by enthusiasm to eventually play this, I never use fast travel in Elder Scrolls or Fallout as I find it too immersion breaking.

I was really torn over the rush to NG+ thing when the game came out. In the end I decided I wouldn't rush, but I also wouldn't waste time on collectibles or putting much into base building or ship building. Anyway, 220 later, I'm at the final mission. Now I did spend a lot of time on base building, but it was more to earn credits and XP and rank up skills. There's nothing I'd want to show off, it's all just functional. I still have 10 temples to discover though and it's maybe the most frustrated I've been with the game in all that time. For a start, it's one mission at time, then back to Vlad to get the next location. I also HATE the flying into sparkling orbs thing. Takes me way too long as I find it very easy to get into a rhythm of missing one, and then not having enough time to get to the next one as I wasted time turning around, looking for where it went, and then also have some extra distance to go. Not sure if missing them resets progress but it feels like it does. Can't imagine doing this 10 times for each power to truly max them out.

DF reckon with the last patch boosting performance on PC by a vast amount, the SeriesX might get a performance mode.

This performance boost is nearly replicated on a lower-tier Ryzen 5 3600 system, where I recorded a 17 percent frame-rate improvement with the beta patch installed. This brings this CPU into 60fps territory much more frequently, which makes a big difference to how smooth the game feels to play. This kind of a performance uplift makes me think a performance mode on console could be much more viable now, given that the 3600 and the Xbox Series X CPU operate within a similar performance profile.

All told, the Starfield beta patch is a huge step forward for the game on PC, with the improved CPU performance being a particularly impressive turnaround that will see many more people operating at 60fps than before, while GPU performance uplifts for Nvidia users especially are also game-changing. The user experience is also significantly improved through the inclusion of DLSS upscaling, DLSS frame generation and controls for HDR and FOV.

However, it's clear that more work needs to be done for Starfield to be in a truly satisfactory state on PC. The game's HDR implementation still pales against community efforts, while traversal stutter remains a bugbear and Intel GPU performance also seems subpar. These all feel like solveable challenges, so I hope we see Bethesda continue to polish and improve the game over time.

Has that patch dropped now? Might get it updating and give it a go later. Keen to see what it looks like with dlss3.
