That's the point - Starfox was always known for its pioneering visuals. Hell, they even designed a special graphics chip for the SNES version.

After looking at what Nintendo can do with the Wii U in Mario Kart, Splatoon etc, this is a huge disappointment.

They could have made Starfox look spectacular, and given the Wii U a memorable send off with a high-octaine space shoot-em-up.

Instead, they make a game, which again tries to justify the second screen, which most people won't use if they can avoid it.

You won't be able to avoid it.

To be fair though people seemed to have enjoyed it in games that took it as part of there core design.

Actually, I think you can switch with a button press. Maybe it was just for demo purposes (capturing footage) but in the treehouse they swapped the screens using the minus/select button. The wonderful 101 did something like this to so you could play off tv etc. So it might still be in the final game. Here, 4:20.

Pilfered from NeoGAF, but I think that the 60 FPS game-play sample looks rather good: http://www.gamersyde.com/hqstream_star_ ... 48_en.html

It looks much better in motion. I love the clean bright look but I still think it should look better still. Hopefully it will take on a 3D World style upgrade.

Its so you can accurately aim in first person mode while still seeing the overall view of what's going on like you have always been able to do.

They showed off where they have purposefully put enemies and weak points you need to hit in places you wouldn't have been able to aim at before because they aren't in front of the ship.

It's also pretty cool the way you can deal with the boss in two different ways. One for the complete and one for the accomplish. It would be good if the branching paths are all to do with your choices rather then getting a certain score.

A recurring complaint about the recent Kirby was that people weren't able to pay any attention to the TV while playing, so the idea that you need both views at the same time doesn't hold any water.

I'm not sure what you mean that 'it doesn't hold water'.

Be it a good or bad thing, that is how they've designed this game.

I think the real question is this...why does HSH suddenly like the look of this game when he hated the previous Starfox games? I think thats confusing me more than anything to do with the game...

Old games were too basic, it looks like they are at least trying to add more to do in the game this time.

And I wouldn't take it too far, I'm not even sure if I have said I 'liked the look of this game', I don't think its as bad as it showed in the press conference, but that's hardly the same thing. I'm definitely not doing back flips over how amazing I think its going to be. Still not even sure if I'll end up buying the game to be honest, I'm yet to be convinced but I'm at least open to the possibility it might be good.

It doesn't looks like it adds much though....it looks massively like a classic style Starfox game.

The fact you can even dislike Lylat Wars boggles my minds. :(

Did you see the Treehouse presentation? Seemed to me like they'd added more structure to the game.

A Nintendo Life rep played the game at E3 and he doesn't sound very positive in his report. I'd be amazed if this is polished up enough to hit a 2015 release date. I'd rather it was delayed and moulded so that it stands up as being a great Star Fox title.

That doesn't sound promising. What the hell have they done to the controls? :dread: Left and right on the right stick to barrel roll? Up and down to thrust and brake?! That's not going to cause any accidental inputs at all.

My vehicle kept crashing into the water as I continually made my Arwing transform, by accident. My reticle was off centered perpetually, which became recentered only by pressing in the left stick. Lasers were fired with the back Z triggers, not the face buttons. L and R did nothing – rolling was instead done with the right stick. I felt like I was playing a trick level of Super Mario Maker in which all of my controls instinctively did the opposite of what I would have expected.

Sounds a lot like he just expected it to be the same as previous games tbh. He kept making his vehicle transform by pressing the same button over and over? Thats his issue. Reticule not centered was probably because he wasn't thinking about gyro controls.
Someone who has gotten gold medals on every stage of Star Fox 64 should not have been reduced to such questions, and yet here we are.

Wah. I'm hardcore and I skipped tutorial and I dunno what I'm doing now. Boohooooo!

Someone managed to get both screens filmed from the show floor in this vid.

The Verge are also down on the controls.

Just read on twitter that the gyro controls can be turned off (thank god) but switching between two screens is definitely an obligatory part of the experience

That's how it was in Starfox 64, which they seem to be trying to emulate here, so I imagine that will be the case.

Yeah. I'd forgotten just how many in SF64 were. Hopefully they all will be as I think its more satisfying that way. To have discovered a secret route rather then just killed x number of bogeys.

That seems like a strawberry floating nightmare to be honest. Switching between two screens to aim whilst trying to chase Star Wolf or something sounds dizzying as hell.

The 2 screens at 60fps just seems to be tying your hands behind your back for no good reason.

Imagine having to do that crap in Splatoon :dread:
