Why are you so excited about this being average Nick? It's much more embarrassing than anything Photek has said in here.

5/10 - "The limping dead"

Perhaps if State of Decay 2 had the kind of depth that drew you in, these technical faults would be easier to overlook. But it’s because of the lack of meaningful motivations that they stick out so predominantly. State of Decay 2 settles into a rhythm that might be easy for you to pass some hours with, but it’s never a ride with genuine surprises, excitement or purpose. There’s promise in so many systems that it introduces, but they’re woefully underutilized to make space for repetitive activities that are nowhere near as exciting to engage with. State of Decay 2 feels like the lumbering enemies that populate its country mountains. Aimless, wandering, and just out of place.

Viagra no longer works for him and the only way Nick can now manage an erection is by posting poor or average reviews of Xbox games.

Nick please stop this it's strawberry floating annoying and you clearly have no interest in the actual game.

This is somewhat disappointing but if the bugs are like the first game I can probably live with it.

The PC version being superior coupled with the free game pass will be a great way to see if it's as bad as some have said.

Yep. Dude's just trolling now. I expect a "I'm innocent of trolling" post incoming.

Yeah, that's mainly what's drawing me in tbh.

I still remember how they said they were going to add co-op to the original then months later turned round and said "Can't do it sorry lol." :x

Yeah that was annoying when they did that. PC seems to have far fewer bugs and at 60fps it should run great. There's the same 'jank' as SoD1 but not to the same level as far as I can tell so far.

So many cars have zero petrol in them, keep that in mind when you head off looking for one. Another mate of mine has picked this up so we're trying 3 player co-op tonight, hope it's still running ok.

This seems a bit harsh. Lots of these resource management sims are "aimless" but people put loads of hours into Stardew Valley just because they find the progression treadmill of upgrading things so compelling.

As long as we have a good laugh then I can look past the bugs and glitches. In time they might even get it patched to a more acceptable state.

How have you been anyway, Zell? Haven't seen you around these parts in a while.

Chalk up another positive review: Waypoint's Austin Walker likes it

Worth noting: as a longtime listener of the Waypoint podcast, Walker has a very, very specific type of game that he cannot resist: those games that allow you to make your own stories. He's an active DM and, in the above, you can see him DMing his way through State of Decay 2. It's weird. He's one of, if not the, most interesting voices in video games today but I just don't trust his judgement here. Give him a game with procedurally generated characters and enough room to make your own story and he's in love, to the point where he's often willing to overlook even the most basic shortcomings. He's very much a heart guy if we go back to the old DPAD Head vs Heart system.

Eeeeeeerm, sometimes. I think it's more that he just looks for different things in games that the majority of reviewers (the above mentioned 'create your own story' aspect being one of them).

Like I say, I genuinely think he's the most interesting voice in video game criticism but his tastes tend to run opposite when it comes to reviews.

I just watched that, and it's pretty bizarre how gushing he gets about a load of stuff he just made up and isn't actually in the game. I love the idea of emergent backstories and gooseberry fool like that, but if it's just a case of you have to imagine it, and the game won't reflect it, that's not really what I'm interested in. It just seems bizarre to review a game based on the stuff you've imagined about it rather than the content within it.

Not that I was really expecting that from this. I liked what I played of the first, (before I had to move to my current laptop which for some reason would only run it on integrated graphics,) and if the second is more of the same, I'll be really pleased with that.

Yeah I don't dislike him or anything, he's very entertaining. Stuff like this and his article about why the single shot camera in God of War was bad seem a bit....for a lack of a better word, indulgent. No one wants reviews that are a just a list of pro's and con's but finding really bizarre issues or completely ignoring them isn't particularly helpful.

I guess if your reading a site like Waypoint you're probably into your videogames and this isn't your only source of critique.

I rarely read the Waypoint articles as, even for me, they're super strawberry floating pretentious. He apparently got a lot of flack for that particular article due to its ridiculous headline and shoehorned in reference to the This is America video. It actually had a decent point to it, but the headline was like something from the worst parts of the Guardian comments section.

The worst was when they called an indie game transphobic for using a trans character's deadname as a puzzle clue. They went full-on, writing an entire article about how horrible it was and publishing it with the headline "Don't deadname. Ever." It was only after they published it that the creators were given a say. Turns out that particular bit was written by a trans person who wanted to the show the absolute cuntiness of a character by having him use the trans character's deadname in a derogative fashion. Waypoint finally changed the title of the article after a followup conversation with the creators, but did not take the original article down, and begrudgingly admitted they may have been too quick to judge.

As much as I love their podcast, they're far too quick to appointment themselves moral guardians of the games industry*

*Don't worry, I too see the irony in me having this viewpoint

Undead Labs are contracted to make 1 more game for MS but State of Decay is an IP owned by MS. I wonder if MS will use a different dev for the next one?

That said I love what we have but a big budget version with no jankiness would be great.

Weren't Undead Labs planning on making a zombie MMO as well?
