Late last week in London, a number of upcoming Xbox One exclusive titles were shown to European media, including State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition. At the event, State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition's release date was confirmed to be April 28, 2015 worldwide, a few days earlier than previously stated for European audiences. A Day One Edition was also revealed, granting early adopters the Prepper's Pack for a limited time. This pack offers up a special supply drop featuring the following items:

SKS Firearm - A classic Soviet-era semi-automatic carbine, modded up with all the latest furniture, including a 40mm grenade launcher under the barrel. Perfect for picking zombies off one-by-one...then blowing them all to pieces when things go south.
Prepper SUV - The ultimate marriage of cargo capacity and durability, this rugged off-road vehicle was a solution waiting for a problem. The reinforced body offers top-of-the-line resistance to zombie incursions, with plenty of room in the back to store all your best survival gear.
Folding Axe Melee Weapon - An essential piece of survival hardware. It's light, portable, and made of modern materials that will keep a sharp edge, even after multiple brainings.

With that information in hand, I took State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition for a spin to try a new "mysterious supply drop" mission. Lily radioed me from our home base to let me know that a beacon was emitting a strange, garbled message, and that I ought to go check it out. A new icon appeared on my map, situated in a vast expanse of rolling farmland.

Taking control of survivor Gurubani Kaur, previously revealed to be an exclusive unlock for those that purchased State of Decay on Xbox 360, I set out toward the source of the signal. After screaming across the map in a rusted-out sedan, I approached the drop site at a crawl.

A large crate was swarmed by undead - at least a dozen - including some Freaks, indicated by larger red spots on the minimap. With eight bullets in the chamber of my suppressed Wingate Commando rifle and only three more in hand, stepping outside the car at this point would mean certain death. Slowly I reverse away from the crates. The zombies are oblivious to me… until a honk of the horn sends them running in my direction. I gun the engine, taking out six or seven zeds and knocking over a dangerous Feral in one go. I circle around like a knight on a jousting track and charge again. Three more find death (again!) underneath my tires, but the car has clearly had enough.

I exit the car, fire off a few shots, then walk up to the final zombie on site and relieve it of its head with a swing of Gurubani's heirloom antique Talwar sword. I approach the crate and begin searching, holding LB to speed things up; noise is not a factor at this point. As I sort through the loot - military-grade ammo, grenades, medicine - my eyes lock on an "experimental revolver shotgun." Just in time, too - the loot drop begins emitting a piercing klaxon, sending more zombies running in my direction. I could run, but I can't help but try out my new toy immediately. The explosion of undead is worth it. And here, the demo comes to an end.

State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition releases for Xbox One digitally and at retail on April 28, 2015 worldwide. State of Decay Xbox 360 owners will receive a 33 percent discount on State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition when purchased through the Xbox Games Store till June 30, 2015.

The trailer showed up on my Facebook timeline yesterday, it looks strawberry floating brilliant! I think this is more like the zombie game I'm looking for rather than Dying Light, Dead Rising or Dead Island can offer (though I'm not saying they're bad, they're brilliant in fact!)

I tried this for the first time today and I really didn't like it. It just feels so amateur and bland. It could've been good but going out on supply runs and exploring isn't entertaining when you don't care about the people you're trying to save. All the NPCs are so wooden and boring that it's not a game I'd be able to immerse myself in. And it was too easy. Give me something like Dead Rising over SoD any day, DR doesn't take itself seriously but still has a much better atmosphere and sense of tension than this.

Well, how long did you play it for? It does get hard and you do care for your team when you meet new members and the plague comes, there's lots of things you would experience in just a few Hours play.

I just got back to the church after getting meds from the vets. I'll probably give it some more time before I give up on it anyway. I was in one of those funny moods today where I felt like playing all sorts of games but couldn't decide on anything.

I think it's one of those games that takes a while to get invested in.

The problem is, is that it does have a couple of rough edges, which can put people off in the initial period. I had this on the 360 and stopped playing after about 10 hours for no particular reason, bought it again on the PC in a Steam sale (not even booted it up), but will prob triple dip and buy this on release and give it a proper go.

It does have some annoyances, and sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed with everything that is going on, and not sure what I should/need to be doing, but I reckon with some time spent there is a very rewarding game to be had.

There is. It's a slow-burner - if you play it as such. Happily, I do. I think this is the second-best zombie apocalypse game for me (Dying Light being the new favourite). I love the freedom to sneak about, playing hide-and-seek with the zombies wherever possible. I don't like that the game has a few rough edges (hopefully this new HD version will at least address that), and the somewhat juvenile tone (and visuals) is a bit of a downer in what could have been a great 'Walking Dead' style zombie survival game. But when all is said and done it's still a very good open-world zombie game. I'll buy into the HD version. Triple-dip for me, too (I also have 360 and PC versions). :fp:

This is now available to pre-download on X1, 33% off if you own it on 360, no fiddling about, live knows if you did or not and deducts accordingly.

I'm downloading now. :datass:

Me, too. Can't wait. One of the best zombie games around, imo, and looking forward to playing the HD version. Steam forums are, of course, up-in-arms that Undead Labs didn't see fit to make this a free upgrade to the previous version - lots of crying. All very entertaining. Nowt so 'self-entitled' than the so-called 'gaming community'.

I can see why they are annoyed by having to pay again if they are used to the cross buy system on PlayStation. I have a few PS4 games that I was able to download for free because I had owned them on PS3.

Its a remastered version of the same game though, so its not actually the same thing, it'd be like wanting The Last of Us on PS4 for free.

If they want the original they can have it much cheaper. 33% off on Steam/X1 for previous owners, for €20 its a no brainer for what is essentially 3 games in one.

I am not saying they are right to demand the game for free but I am saying I can see why it annoys people that bought the original and who are used to cross buy for "smaller" games like this.

Again, its a remaster, they uprezzed all the textures (huge job), added AI routines, Vehicles, weapons and extra animations. They can have originals if they chooose, I don't see the problem.
