Steam OS

Image

Steam is coming to a new operating system
As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

Living room & Steam
Finally, you don’t have to give up your favorite games, your online friends, and all the Steam features you love just to play on the big screen. SteamOS, running on any living room machine, will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available.

Fast forward
In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.

Cooperating system
Steam is not a one-way content broadcast channel, it’s a collaborative many-to-many entertainment platform, in which each participant is a multiplier of the experience for everyone else. With SteamOS, “openness” means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they’ve been able to. Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love. SteamOS will continue to evolve, but will remain an environment designed to foster these kinds of innovation.

Steam Machines

Steam Machines. A powerful new category of living-room hardware is on the horizon. Finally, a multiple choice answer. Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

Steam Controller

Image

We realised early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology — one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we’ve arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you.

Superior Performance. Traditional gamepads force us to accept compromises. We’ve made it a goal to improve upon the resolution and fidelity of input that’s possible with those devices. The Steam controller offers a new and, we believe, vastly superior control scheme, all while enabling you to play from the comfort of your sofa. Built with high-precision input technologies and focused on low-latency performance, the Steam controller is just what the living-room ordered.

Complete catalogue. The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support. (We’ve fooled those older games into thinking they’re being played with a keyboard and mouse, but we’ve designed a gamepad that’s nothing like either one of those devices.) We think you’ll agree that we’re onto something with the Steam Controller, and now we want your help with the design process.

You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!

So it's basically a linux distro? That's a cool idea, but it's the sort of thing that will take a long time to gain traction with the bigger third parties. Not that they care or should care but I'm sticking to Windows unless they get some sort of WINE crossplay thing going on.

EDIT: I'm a one machine man, that networking thing is a waste. OK so it's not really for me full stop.

I think this could be a quite a big thing long term. A lot of people take note of what Valve do and I think a lot of people will start crunching numbers and may well start looking at making Linux variants of games.

Presumably, if you can stream across the network, specs wouldn't be an issue and you could use a cheap-o mini-PC to run SteamOS on your main telly or whatever. Maybe even some sort of android dongle would be good enough.

Until I see the OS in action it's hard to get excited but if you could run it on an Atom NUC that could be the basis for a fantastic set top box that connects up to your PC.

No doubt the own brand Steam box device is around the corner. But it might be that Valve decide to allow manufacturers to use Steam OS for free/cheap in the same way that Google has licensed out Android to phone makers. Valve won't be looking to make money from the OS but its success and wide adoption will bolster the Steam digital store platform now when there are so many other ways for consumers to buy digital goods.

That seems to be the gist of it evan.

I wonder what the next announcement will be, the consensus is it's the steambox, so unified hardware to run the os on and stream to your tv if that is the path you wish to take.

I'm interested. Currently my only computers are Macs, but over the last year I've brought a ridiculous number of windows only games through Steam sales, knowing I'd probably get another PC eventually. I was reaching the point where I was considering a cheap laptop soon, but a Steambox would be perfect.

This will take a while to take off. The fact that they mentioned you can stream games from PC to it says to me that it won't run the whole Steam library (how could it?).

WINE?

Although performance probably won't be on a par running games natively in Windows. Unless Valve do some tweaking.

Anyway, it's free! Hopefully it'll be a viable competitor to Windows.

What will be interesting will be if games start natively supporting Steam OS. Its possible eventually you'll get more gaming performance out of this than through Windows.

I keep seeing people mention that, one guy on gaf said he thought valve would do a timed exclusive of HL3, but that would remove a microsoft amount of good will from the community.

Why would it?

It's free, I'd imagine they'll produce a tool which will install it onto a Windows PC without that much hassle...what's the problem?

I'm not saying I think they'll do it, but they might release it for Steam OS at the same time with some exclusive features.

Seems a bit pointless no?

Since you can probably play like 20% of your games on it.

Because releasing one of the most anticipated games ever and limit it to steamos just to force the adoption would be MS levels of moronic.

If I had to run a partition, and install steamos just to play a single game it would be a massive pain in the arse and I would probably not bother doing it even for my most wanted game.
