What's VR gaming like these days then?

I hear the HTC Vive 2 could be on the way. I think that's when I'll be joining the fray.

Incredible. Of course there will a major hardware revision at some point, but that could be a year or two away. The main thing it definitely needs is an increase in screen resolution, because the screen door effect is the one thing that lets it down. Most of the time I can forget it's there (in a racing game for example because you're so focused) but in elite and you have to read a lot, you really notice it. I hope one day when pixel density increases, the screen part of the headset can be upgraded.

I bought space pirate trainer yesterday, heard good things about it and it's on sale.

Hopefully it's a higher pixel density screen and different lenses. Even more hopefully I can send mine off and have those put in as an upgrade.

Above all else I'd like a reduction in the screen door effect.

'Vive Pro' then.

2880x1600 resolution and integrated headphones as standard. Also a wireless model for both the current and pro vive.

I hate the way Pro is used to make something sound more important than it is, it's such a lazy way to name things.

That sounds pretty good, on the updates. Now for some people to actually try the unit out and get some genuine impressions

If it's wireless then I might jump in on PC VR sometime this year (assuming it launches this year)

Problem with that is you end up with a worthless second hmd as nobody is buying those without controllers and basestations

True.

I'll pass on this. Current Vive is brilliant as it is and is be better off wasting a few years until a more substantial upgrade comes out, then get that and upgrade my pc at the same time.

I'd really love to know whether the improved resolution doesn't just look prettier but whether, as I suspect, it improves the whole VR experience. Tangible improvements is a good sign for the future of VR.

It definitely will - in games like elite dangerous, leaning in to read text suddenly makes you aware of the pixels (you tend to filter them out playing normally or in action). Any improvement in this would help a lot. Saying that, these screens still have visible pixels which is enough to make me comfortable waiting it out a few years. I've only had my Vive just over a year after all.

Edit: I forgot all about the wireless add-on, now that is something I likely will buy. Be a total game changer for room scale as being aware of the cable really takes you out of the moment.

Had an hour on superior vr tonight as it's been a while since I spent any meaningful time playing room scale vr.

It's amazing, but strawberry float me am I tired, feel like I've done a proper work out or something. I also stood on the chord when crouched and stood up which pulled on the headset pretty hard. Wireless can't come soon enough.

Bought Arkham VR as it's only £2.99 on CD keys. Played it in one session, bloody loved the detective parts, I'd love a full game of that kind of thing. The end genuinely creeped me out, no strawberry floating way could I play resident evil 7 in vr for example based on this :dread:

Pleased to see at the end it unlocks a load of extras to go back and find
