I wish all of these companies would form a body to make a standard set of technology, like bluray is licensed for example, then everyone makes their own versions of it to give compatibility.

All that's going to happen with this is there's going to be a lot of early adopters with expensive and dead hardware after ashout period of time, souring the whole VR thing for a lot of people.

I look at VR headsets like I look at Android phones.

They all have different screens, different cameras, different processors etc, but at the end of the day they all run the same OS, apps and games.

So you could have a scenario where you have a choice between a cheap and cheerful Oculus Rift for £200, or a high end Stream VR for £400.

Look at that picture TNAG posted. They've just blacked it out. A complete non story.

The image I posted confirms that Valve have been officially using the image. TNAG's post made no reference to where the image came from, it could have been a fan mock up for all we know.

Regardless, it looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing than last year's prototype.

There's a post on GAF saying how Valve, Oculus and Sony are all sharing various findings between them. You also have Valve working on a API which will allow any game to work on any headset:

The "story" is based on a tweet made by an anonymous account. All the image confirms is that techradar don't need much before they'll run a story and it reflects badly on them.

I thought me using the phrase "mock up" would have been enough for you to know I was posting something that wasn't from valve.

I found it on the Oculus Sub Reddit, made by one of their users. They've made a few more since too, based around black mesa/ a head crab.

You said that the silhouette you posted was found on a valve page, could you link to it? I can't find it. If you didn't see it yourself then where did you get this information?

This might cause a mad wave of smugness.......

Here is the valve VR headset. It's a joint project with HTC.
Image

HTC has sprung something of a surprise at MWC 2015: behind the launch of the One M9 is a new virtual reality headset.

Teaming up with Valve, the Taiwanese brand is the hardware name behind the new headset, which promises to 'change the VR game' as we know it.

Running the forthcoming SteamVR platform, the HTC Vive is designed to be high end hardware which brings clearer, crisper images – and allows for real time 360 movement within the virtual reality.

No phone in sight

Unlike Samsung, the HTC Vive won't use a phone at all for the VR, instead tethering to a PC for the processing – which will surely limit the ability to see what's going on when moving around in your virtual world.

We're still waiting on more information to land about this new joint venture, but HTC assures us it will extend beyond gaming into education, entertainment and more.

The HTC Vive developer kit will be launched in spring this year, with the final consumer unit going on sale before the end of 2015. Predictably there's no word on price yet, but this already sounds like it's going to be rather expensive…

Wait, so I get this thing is real, what I don't understand is how the fan made mock ups had the same silhouette, since they were made a day before the techradar article.

Competition is always good though.

HTC. Half Life 3. HTC. Half Life 3.

Sounds similar.

Site gives a 1200x1080 90hz screen for each eye. Ability to use your own headphones and even mentions specially created VR controllers that are tracked via the headset. Plus Steam VR base station to track your physical location.

This sounds like a lot more than just a headset, they seem to have a solution for movement.

"The Vive headset was developed in conjunction with Valve, creators of such ground-breaking games as Portal and Half-Life."

Portal 3 and Half-Life 3 confirmed???

This sounds like a lot more than just a headset, they seem to have a solution for movement.

Unless you have a multidirectional treadmill or don't mind play spaces confined to the size of your room, the solution for movement is WASD.

Some details on the controller

"Ergonomic VR game controllers in each hand allow you to use virtual objects and interact with the virtual world. The position of each controller is tracked in space, allowing developers to simulate a wide range of activities and interactions."

Sounds like they're following Sony's lead by going with two Move controllers.
