I think the only time I've ever had Fosters was at a Wetherspoons because it came free in their burger meal deal thing.

Yo Englanders. Explain beers in pubs for me in England, anytime I was in Liverpool/London most pubs had about 3-4 beers on tap, in Dublin we have about 10-12 carrying all the big brands usually. Whats the craic with that?

Its the same with some bars in Belfast. They have very little in the way of a selection.

Not sure what pubs you've been going in in London as most have a massive selection. I'm guessing you were at a Liverpool's supporters pub which are often a bit gooseberry fool.

Yeah, but why is that? it's weird. Like I've been in Liverpool pubs several times the size of a smaller one in Dublin and it'll have about a quarter or less in selection of beers on tap.

It depends where you go, my regular has about 15. Five regular largers, five bitters and five craft beer. Plus they have a load of bottled beer.

It all depends on the pub. Some of the chain places (Wetherspoons type places) will have very few beers on tap, other places do a wide variety. It’s pot luck really.

A lot of pubs will have barrels of more interesting drink behind the bar, there will usually be a “menu” of beers up behind the bar somewhere that will tell you what they have. We have a lot of craft beer places nowadays as well, they don’t really sell any brand names, but their own stuff or stuff from micro-breweries. Even Wetherspoons do real ale/cider festivals now, although I haven’t sampled them so don’t know if they are any good.

Fair enough, it's just that it's across the board in Dublin and most of ireland AFAIK to have 10 or so taps. We have a couple of Wetherspoons over here I'll check one out to see if they carry lots of beers...

I noticed it in Liverpool and Notthingham on pub crawls I couldn't really stick to the same beer in each pub, something you can do easily in Dublin.

Is it true that the Guinness is better?

I tell ya what's weird.

I was in a pub in Stockport and I asked for sparkling water.

The bloke behind the bar poured me some water from the tap and put a drop of lemonade in it. I was mortified.

According to my mates it is, I only drink Guinness in the winter and didn't try it. I presume it's brewed from St James' Gate here tho for England???

I think that a few years ago the Guinness in England was brewed either in England or some other country and people would say that the different water used made it taste different. The last few years though we get the stuff direct from Dublin and so there shouldn’t be a difference anymore.

I imagine it's all down to volume sold. You need to get through a fair amount to justify having something on tap.

Which incidentally is why the Guinness does taste better in Dublin compared to lots of places in the UK, it's never sat for long

WTF?

I used to live near a pretty rough pub that was on one of the main routes in Bristol. The locals would all drink this weird fluorescent yellow/orange cider that smelt hideously but we used to go there occasionally because it was so cheap. It was always amusing to see people come in who had no idea about the place and watch their look of horror as they spotted the people in there. I especially enjoyed the time a quite posh lady was asking what wine they served, only to be told “we’ve got white and red”, the wine being some ancient bottles of cheap plonk covered in dust because nobody ever drank it.

They've started selling a lot more 5l kegs in supermarkets - Budweiser Budvar seems to be everywhere, though it's rather impractical on your own.
