PostSpoiler: Stella Artois the UK’s favourite beer brand at home, as Budweiser unseats Foster’s for 2nd

Budweiser has overtaken Foster’s to become Britain’s second biggest beer brand

Supermarket value sales of the AB InBev brand have surged by £17.5million to £381.7m.

Including Bud Light, which has pulled in £30.5million in extra sales this year, and Prohibition, this figure rises to an eye-watering £418.4m - a 13.3% rise year on year. Bud Light was the best performing lager SKU in the supermarket this year.

Foster’s, meanwhile, has had 11% of its value wiped away, falling to £354.2m. Its standard lager has lost £31.8m (8.4%). While its Gold variant has lost £11.4m (68.4%).

Budweiser’s growth has been “phenomenal”, said the UK’s marketing manager Rowan Chidgey. “Its performance has been driven by its affiliation to key sporting events and cultural moments this year.”

This switch in ranking means AB InBev now owns Britain’s two biggest supermarket beer brands - Stella Artois remaining on top with £512.8m in value sales.

King of beers, indeed...

I’ve just finished off a box of Bud Light. It was bloody terrible, but it was insanely cheap, which would go a large way to explaining its current sales success presumably: it’s one of the cheapest beers on the shelves.

I always tend to end up on Budweiser using the “what’s the cheapest per ml that isn’t Fosters or Carling” policy.

If I'm drinking I'd rather buy something I'd enjoy drinking. I tend to go for IPA's. Stella isn't all that terrible though, IMO. Don't think I've had one in years though.

You can't let the craft beer people win, some of us don't want beer that is just the taste of hops or requires a knife and fork.

Stella. Eugh. The only normal beer I would buy is probably Carlsberg.

I'm probably going to be stoned for that.

There's a vast range of options between craft beer and Stella/Bud/Fosters.

For strawberry float sakes, what the gooseberry fool!

This is ridiculous, I really don't understand how and why people just drink one beer and always drink that, I mean aside from the fact these beers suck its just stupid, I mean its like going "hey I like ham sandwiches, I'm going to only ever eat ham sandwiches as I know I like ham sandwiches".

How can you live your life drinking the same flavour every single time you have a beer is just dull and shows a massive lack of imagination.

I love my craft beer and this isn't a "OMG THIS IS ALL PISS" thing, I just don't understand how someone can have the same thing over and over and not walk into a bar and think hmmm what shall I have, I havn't had that beer I'll go for that.

Confuses the gooseberry fool out of me. There are so many good beers both craft and macro there is just no need to go for the ham sandwich every time!

I always drink Yorkshire Tea when there are plenty of alternative tea brands. Does this make me boring?

I 100% line up with your way of thinking but the reality is that the huge numbers of people know what the like and like what they know. Your example of someone liking ham sandwichs and then sticking with ham sandwiches the rest of their life is actually pretty true. I know a whole load of people who have the same thing for lunch every day, will get the same thing from the chinese every time, will go to the same place on holiday every time. People like routine and part of that is having the same beer they always have simply because its "their" beer.

There's a vast range of options between craft beer and Stella/Bud/Fosters.

I was specifically replying to the posts about Errkal above mine.

Drink what you like, etc. Personally I find the American largers very refreshing on a hot day but I do make a point of trying different things as I'm lucky to live in a place where the pubs have a good range of beers. I'm starting to enjoy more craft beers but I'll always try a bit before ordering a pint.

I remember when Carling was practically the default back in the late 90s/early 00s, the worst larger.
