Having had four of the shitters that is the RRoD (and totally lost any faith/love for MS & Xbox) - I found this interesting. I don't doubt that it isn't all true, but certainly some of it smacks of the truth - and wrangles.

To be honest their customer service is just as bad as the console design.

It really is the worst piece of gooseberry fool ever designed.

Reliability wise there no doubt. [edit] actually that's sensationalist and there is clearly doubt. I have owned a multitude of electronic devices over the years that have broken after a pathetically short time. Including one of my PC's which was the most unreliable I have ever had (far worse than the 360). So no that's just the usual sort of over the top statement we come out with on forums.

It is a bloody shame because technologically, in terms of the design and capability of it as a gaming system and the O/S and features it has it is quite frankly brilliant.

They've let themselves down massively cutting corners in production and will be hurt by this for years to come.

such a shame after then first was very reliable.

True fishy. But compared to every other electronic device I've owned, being on my fifth 360 kinda takes the piss.

It is indeed a shame.

Blimey yeah, it is completely unacceptable.

The things that annoys me the most is that we already know the cause and modders have consistently fixed their own. That being the case.. why are MS having such trouble?

To be fair we don't know if the Falcons are dramatically beyond the 5% rate or indeed if judo has had a rare 60gb failure on his (as it certainly hasn't been a widely reported problem).

MS would do themselves a big favour to come out and tell us.. what was the failure rate.. and what is the failure rate on the newer models. Let the buyer know and then decide. Things always break and if it's just the odd one now fine but we need to know to have any confidence. Having just had our Core replaced (after 3 failures they binned it aparently as an unacceptable level), I'd like to know if we're getting something much better back.

Not only is the console build crap, so are the controllers.

I've had 4 controllers.

The first one, a launch one, was perfect. But now the left stick creaks and it's all worn so I've had to replace it.

A wired one I used to have constantly vibrated. Not fully but enough to irritate and take away from the game.

The 2nd wireless one I had has a D-pad that doesn't respond half the time when you press up.

My newest wireless controller, which has replaced my first, has a left bumper that doesn't click. It's squishy. Whereas the right bumper clicks as normal.

I've also noticed that the newer controllers feel much more flimsy, cheap and fragile than my original.

I'm on my 4th 360.

I got two pads with mine and one had a dodgy left stick within about a week!

The console itself is still fine (got it new in Jan/Feb - around then) but turning the thing on is the scariest part of my day.

Ah ha, so the controllers are gooseberry fool, i thought they were! one of mine has a loose battery pack and is constantly disconnecting if it takes even the slightest tap, which can be a bitch during Halo 3, and the other has a slight tilt on the left stick, which means if you leave it idle it may turn you slightly untill you reset it.

I've had my 360 for a year now and it hasn't shown any signs of failing, at all. I guess I'm just lucky, as I know it would piss me off a treat if I had to send it off to MS to repair. I remember when my GC died though, I took it back to Game and they replaced it with a brand new one, shame they can't do the same here. x

When a new era of technology ushers, things we used in the past fade away, caves, the steam engine, black and white tellys, VHS... Microsoft™ are not a small company and are very much aware of this.

The majority of XBOX® 360™s have committed mass suicide because the year of the PlayStation®3 has come. I will not insult anyone who wishes to stay in the past, after all it is an ape's choice whether it wants to evolve into a man.

Lucky you, not only did they once lose my console, but now they're screwing me out of my Xbox Live account.

Fascinating article. What a price MS have had to pay in repairs and reputation.
Serves Microsoft right for ditching the first Xbox too early before the 360 was ready.
People stuck with it because only the expensive PS3 was the alternative to play next gen games.
Why would anyone want to buy the 360's successor at launch after this fiasco?

So the Atari/ET Video Game crash of the early 80s was far less of a problem than the RRoD, a known fault on the 2nd most popular home console of the moment?

Riiiiiight.
